President Bush met with Robert Gates, his nominee to replace Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, before Gates headed to the Senate for his confirmation hearing. View brief webcast of Bush and Gates at WH today. The Senate Armed Services Committee voted unanimously (21-0) to send Gates's nomination to the full Senate; a vote is expected Wednesday.
Bush had lunch with James Baker. The much-leaked Iraqi study group report is scheduled for a full public release tomorrow.
The leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, met with VP Cheney. Tony Snow said today, "... as Mr. al Hakim noted, the sectarian violence has been going on [in Iraq] for 82 years [since 1924]."
Those who have followed this Bush family through trial and fatigue, through more than one attempt to steal an election, who have watched President George Herbert Walker Bush preside over an immensely successful family and know his deeply-held emotions and pride in his children, will understand why "Poppy" Bush broke up when speaking to Floridians in Tallahassee about the service of his son, outgoing governor Jeb Bush. Here's a link to the video. Pres. Bush 41 said, "The moral of this story is to serve with honor, and your governor has served with honor."
Click here to see Deck the Halls, and Welcome All, the WH web site with videos and information about decorating the White House for Christmas -- this year and back through 2001. Mrs. Bush said, "Roland, our former pastry chef, came back -- by popular demand -- to build a beautiful gingerbread house that all of you can see right here. If you look closely, you'll see that Barney and Miss Beazley are driving Santa's sleigh at the very top. Kitty is here, right underneath the birdhouse."
Getting here LATE & inviting my friends to join me..
Gretchen, this is one of your best.. nice graphics, outstanding pix & wonderful commentary.
Had a nice dinner out with friend(also a FReeper) after an INTENSE day of "x%(%&(@"
yes, not too good! hard work & sore muscles.. well maybe that IS GOOD.. got a lot done today.
Oh of course ;)
True! How you doing jonny?
I can't remember which FReeper's home page I read this on but it really made me laugh. His bio info was brief but included something to the effect that he admits to liking olive loaf. Now THAT'S a confident man!
Thanks, G :)
And thanks for the "freezer burned" loaf, too. Even though it didn't survive, I appreciate that you bought it with me in mind ... originally ;)
Or a man with a strong stomach! Blech :o
Doing just fine :) How about yourself?
Thanks for the ping, Dolly. Glad you were able to get a lot done today.
I have wondered if Olive Loaf was a development that came from food rationing in WW2. You know, a way to make bland meat have some appeal. I will poke around and see what I can find.
I ate it a few times and for an occasional sandwich, it's not too gagocious.
The WH looks SO gorgeous at Christmas time ... thank you for all your hard work, GEM .. just beautiful. Poppy Bush is so dear, and so is Jeb.
Like Spam? Talk about gagocious--LOL *barf* LOL
Some Olive Loaf Bologna Facts:
Not sure how factual this claim is: "use within fourteen months of opening, longer if kept refrigerated"
Wikipedia says: Olive loaf is bologna embedded with black or green olives that are stuffed with pimentos. It is sliced thin and used as a luncheon meat. It usually contains garlic, basil or sweet peppers for additional flavor.
Can't find a date of origin yet.
Hi you guys, thanks for your kind words.
Exackery, but not as bad as SPAM. ewwww spam. The only way I could eat that stuff was on camping trips (Girl Scouts, didn't have a choice, eat that or nuthin') was when it was fried. That helped get rid of the squishy texture.
And sliced thin--that helps too :)
I just watched part of the hearing. First off, Hillary Clinton is a witch, qu4estioning the intelligence and patriotism of the President, VP, and Rummy....disgusting. I hope she gets slammed by at least FNC tomorrow. Gates came back after the break and offered clarification to his comment, stating that the military has not lost one battle they have been involved in Iraq, and they have done an outstanding job. Well....here he goes...he supports the troops but not the mission. I'm very disappointed, even more so after watching some of the replay. He does not seem to be very strong, he answered questions that indicated he is the decision maker, and he discussed events as if speaking from a CIA perspective instead of a DOD perspective. He needs a lot of work, he needs a lot of learning, he needs to think before he speaks. I'm certain that some of what and how he said things today was just to get through the confirmation process, but he wasn't kind to Rummy, and he didn't call the stupid senators on their partisan attacks. Many of the things they said we should be doing are already being done, and Gates should have said as much. I'm extremely disappointed overall in his performance today; and if I was President, I would be questioning my own pick for SECDEF. He did not acquit himself well today.
:-)
I can recall years ago...decades ago.. centuries ago?... loving olive loaf..
