These folks had the means to resist and are not criminals for doing so. In Chicago, they would have been in jail for the pistol alone.

Yep....I had a great Uncle who was part of a lynch mob (quite accidentally, at age 17 - thought he was out for a joy ride on a Friday night) on the Montana/North Dakota state line......a father and son had murdered a family, and buried them on their farm.....we're awaiting trial in the local jail......they were hung....and NO, they were NOT BLACK! It was frontier justice in the late 1930's....

I have twice been present at lynchings that were very narrowly averted, both in South/Eastern Illinois. In one case the deserving recipient was white, in the other black, and I honestly do not think it made the slightest difference; I'm pretty sure the reaction would have been exactly the same had the perpetrators in either case been switched for the assembled *concerned group of citizens.*
