One of the charitable organizations cited by Minuteman Civil Defense Corps boss Chris Simcox on why financial accountability concerns raised by some corps members were unfounded has been fined for failing to keep its own financial records in order, The Washington Times has learned.
The Declaration Foundation, a tax-exempt charity created by conservative activist Alan Keyes, who has vigorously supported the Minuteman movement, was fined $6,500 in August and prohibited by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Charitable Organizations from soliciting donations until it becomes "properly registered."
The Aug. 18 "agreement and order," signed by Declaration Foundation Executive Director Mary Parker Lewis, a top Minuteman adviser, acknowledged that the charity made false statements in seeking to solicit donations, failed to properly administer money it had collected, and withheld documents sought as part of an "investigative subpoena."
According to the bureau, the Declaration Foundation failed over a four-year period to submit audited financial statements, gave false information when it said it did not share revenue with other nonprofit or tax-exempt groups, and misstated the truth when it said none of its officers or employees was tied to any vendor providing services or goods.
The bureau said the Declaration Foundation improperly shared revenue with the Declaration Alliance, another tax-exempt charity founded by Mr. Keyes, which also has been active in overseeing the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps (MCDC).
The Declaration Foundation is at the center of an intricate weave of conservative organizations founded by Mr. Keyes or tied to longtime Keyes associates now working with MCDC. They have served as mentors for Mr. Simcox and provided consulting and financial services for the group's fundraising and media activities.
According to Internal Revenue Service records, the Declaration Foundation reported more than $600,000 in contributions over the past two years and the....

Keep spinning, Carville.
To anyone who cares,
I have left the GOP, pending the Governor of Florida and/or the President the United States acting according to their sworn oaths to uphold our constitutions and innocent human life by simply giving Terri Schiavo a drink of water.
I hope and pray fervently that the Governor and/or the President and their political advisors make my decision moot by acting to save this dying American citizen today.
Those who won't act to prevent a murder in progress, when they have the power to do so, deserves no patriotic American's political support ever again.
Feel free to pass this news along to anyone in any way you feel would be appropriate.
Thomas C. Hoefling
Former National Political Director for Dr. Alan Keyes
Yep. I was desperate to try whatever I could to stop the murder of a helpless woman, and to help her family who were being forced to watch her being starved and dehydrated to death. So sue me.
You don't think Keyes' pandering and hypocritical statements supporting reparations, along with his previous statements about how Hillary was "carpetbagging" by running for Senate in NY, had anything to do with his loss?
Oh yeah, and there were also his hypocritical and mean-spirited remarks about Mary Cheney...
Is Keyes still living in Chicago & trying to reform Illinois politics as he said he would? I didn't think so....
See. Y'all can't help yourselves.
Have a nice evening.
In the scheme of things, you're not even important enough to sue.
I think we're going to see the same thing with MCDC. Maureen Otis is listed as an officer, and her firm is getting lots of "caging fees" from MCDC, yet the IRS report recently made public says none of the officers have a relationship with any of the businesses making money off MCDC....I'm surprised Seper didn't catch that.
I'm not blaming him for anything.
I just think it's funny that the only thing this great Obama has done to get where he is today was to defeat Alan Keyes.
Keyes candidacy was a joke. He was a rent a candidate because
no one serious wanted to run against Obama after Jack Ryan's meltdown. He never had any chance and he knew it.
I won't say it......
Well, I know that...and given his comments about Hillary's candidacy in NY, he was a particularly poor choice. I think he did it for the name recognition after his TV show failed...gotta keep those donations coming in, you know?
Right now I'm more interested in the Maureen Otis thing, though. As far as I can see, that's a blatant falsehood on the 2005 IRS report.
I never can decide why you keep defending Keyes, et.al. Is it an emotional or a financial thing?
Or both?
Strange the article did not get to that?
Yes, I'd have liked to have seen a bit more detail about how they
misstated the truth when it said none of its officers or employees was tied to any vendor providing services or goods.
"What do you think of the independent audit that not only clears Simcox of his critics' unfounded charges, but that makes him look pretty darned smart for the efficient and professional way he ran his organization in its start up year?
Have you apologized yet for taking part in the attempts to smear him?"
Are you man enough to apologize EV, and admit you were wrong?
*Cricket*
Many thanks for the ping.
Since when do we pay for pings? LOL
