that could be because he hasn't seen all the sensitive intelligence .. which I don't think he'll see till he is confirmed ..

My gosh..the 9/11 Commission and the Senate Intelligence Committee report BOTH said there was a link..

I am glad the White House gave him the call and ask to correct his stupid and defeatist statement that he said earlier about we are not winning in Iraq.

It's basically a love fest. The Dims have determined that the US will not, at this point, condone a Vietnam style pullout. So, they are positioning themselves for their new majority in Congress. The strategy is to take over the war and subsequently take credit for pulling the nation's chestnuts out of the fire. Gates is certainly giving the impression that he will be pliable- who knows why? Perhaps he and Dubya have correctly determined that confirmation comes first and the next two years will be another matter.

But, there are al-queda in Iraq now...so unless Gates is being hired to testify on pre-war intelligence...what he knows and doesn't know is moot.

Sessions is up: and he is, as usual, right on the money. This is the type of questioning that brings home the realities of what is involved in the real world. Gates doesn't seem to be confused about Russia's intentions.

Yes...he finally had an answer about something other than Iraq...and I hope he pays a lot of attention to Russia.

He said that he thinks Russia is still "hurting" from losing the cold war, and they are trying to get back to their "major power" status in the world.

Gates stated that Russia has been humiliated and is now on the move to restore its power. He gave a brief summation of Putin's reckless handling of the European fuel situation and generally gave me the impression that he does not trust the Bear.
