Odd last paragraph. Up till Eisenhower I might understand, but why bash Ike.

My grandfather lost most of the hearing in one ear and a toe to frostbite in the battle of the bulge, He was never bitter that I can remember.

He seems very bitter...and paranoid.

It took away five years of my life.

It took a lot more than five years from 400,000.

I see that the author, Jen McCoy, decided to write a hit piece on Rumsfeld and G.W. Bush masquerading as story about WW II veterans.

I know two living WW II veterans who think Democrats should be lined up and shot as traitors (literally).

Would she like to interview them for her next story?

There is something wrong with this story. My Dad was in the area at the same time as this guy and his stories are very different.

Something not right here.

I am proud of Washington up until Truman

Sounds to me like he wasn't very fond of Truman either. If this story was reported truthfully, which I really doubt, he is probably pissed off because Truman dropped the nukes and screwed him out of a tour in the South Pacific. Personally, I think "Jen" might have souped this up a little (or a lot). Gotta clobber President Bush and the Republicans or the story won't get published.

Lil' Jen needs to learn that spell check doesn't fix every mistake. Not only is she clumsy at trying to get her agenda across; she's also a lousy speller. Her editor is not much better.

We were the bulge. I think it was a set-up to draw the Germans. We were the bait

Nut case.

I think he was a liberal that was forced to go to war. I could not rust such a person next to me in a fox hole.

I may not be completely right, but wasn't it the 28th that buckled and run under the first German advance. Didn't the paratroopers come in and save their bacon? One of My cousins was with Patton when he got there.

Her order is all out of whack, too.

The Bombs were dropped in August. This dude would have been home married by then (he was married in March).

She writes like the bombs were dropped and he went home. Idiot.

No worries, this person likely either doesn't exist or has been in comma for the last 10 years.

You forget, they like to make up stories.

The author should be ashamed of herself. She writes this story, just to cram in a paragraph slamming our Administration at the end. I don't care if it is this guy's opinion or not. It doesn't need to be there.

Weak.

Thanks for distilling my thoughts on this guy.

He reminds me of a fellow I met in academia, also a liberal type
from upper Wisconsin.
He told me (with some pride if you can believe it) of how he avoided
service in WWII due to some problem with his shoulders.

Then he said how a schoolmate had gotten into service but was KIA
in the European theater. This was said in sort of a "well, he
got what he asked for" tone.

Only the "respect for your elders" instilled in me by my parents
helped me stay calm on the surface at this little performance.

Read Charles B. MacDonald's A Time For Trumpets and Company Commander and it will become obvious why everybody was always busting this guy in the nose. The Battle of Bulge was won by the Privates, Corporals and Sergeants along with the 2Lts, 1Lts and Captains. Everyone else was caught napping and were way behind the power curve for almost the entire battle.
