Conservation is not an energy policy. And no matter how much gas we drill, it won't be enough, and it will still fund our enemies. I'm becoming more and more convinced that we need an initiative to change our electricity to nuclear from NG and our cars to hydrogen. Energy independence is a vital step in the war on terror, especially when terror controls a large chunk of your oil supply.

Make it part of the WOT and force the building of nuclear power plants. Use the Department of Homeland security to get past the NIMBYs that fight the infrastructure tooth and nail.

No, it's not, but it's policy on the cheap, an no one is going to come out against "conservation".

If we changed our electric power generation from NG to nuclear, we could change our transportation to NG and hydrogen could wait. It is so simple really, like eating lower on the food chain. Without fuel cells or any other exotica, long proven technology could alleviate the problem of reliance on foreign petroleum. The obstacles are all political.
