It has been so cold and shivery in the northwest I have had to rush in to the fireplace after just walking out to the mailbox and back. In the 20s with near 100% humidity and some wind will do that. I wouldn't put my chances real high for many days/nights out there without shelter, but I hope a miracle occurs with the dad. Ashland, OR is in the low 40s right now, calm and clear, but the family was found at a somewhat higher elevation and it was colder earlier.

I feel the same way. But, maybe he had the foresight to carry some gasoline soaked rags with him on his journey; if he did he could walk by day and start enough of a fire to get him through the nights.
