Bloomberg's American Dream: '08 Presidential Run
CBS ^ | Dec 3, 2006

Posted on 12/03/2006 6:45:33 PM PST by calcowgirl

(New York Magazine) Since New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's incursion into national affairs began in March, speculation has steadily grown that he is planning a presidential run in 2008. The cover story of this week's New York magazine, "His American Dream" by contributing editor John Heilemann, adds fuel to the fire, showing that the Mayor and his aides are seriously looking into a presidential run as an independent. "I know something about how to build constituencies in an independent way," Bloomberg says.

The magazine goes on to outline the precise circumstances under which Bloomberg is likely to throw his hat in the ring. The article confirms that Bloomberg ally Michael Steinhardt arranged a dinner with Bloomberg and Al From, founder and CEO of the Democratic Leadership Council...

(snip)

Bloomberg on the smoking ban:

"Nothing I ever do in all my life will save as many lives. Because of that, we have twelve states and twelve countries that have banned it. France has talked about passing a law banning smoking in restaurants. Who would've thought it? France!"

Bloomberg on the candidates he supported in the 2006 elections:

"I tried to support people that I respect ... You look at Schwarzenegger: He's worked across party lines. Or Lieberman: I've disagreed with him on many things, but he's at least willing to say what he believes and not listen to what the party tells him to say. Claire McCaskill [supports] stem-cell research that may be the difference one day between you living and dying."

Bloomberg on Senator John McCain:

"McCain, is he a viable candidate? Is it McCain from the 'Straight-Talk Express' or the guy that went to Liberty University? He is a very nice guy ... but I also think he's pretty conservative."

America doesn't need more RINO's running for POTUS....the only reason Bloomy is running on a Republican Ticket is because the Rats ticket is full....

He's Rat as Rat can be....he's against guns; he's against enjoyment of life...he has enough money to make him happy and wants to make sure you never get there....

He is as phoney as a three dollar bill....

He wouldn't run as a Republican, but as an independent like John Anderson or Ross Perot.

Apparently he knows that.

You know, New York, and NYC in particular, are supposed to be the Dead Ends of politics. Once you make it there, you DON'T make it anywhere, particularly not the Washington. So what's going on? Is something in the water??

We got Rudy. We got Bloomy. We got Hillary (even though she aint really from here.) And we got Pataki.
And they all think they got a shot at something.
Someone check out the aqueduct!

I agree. He's considering running as an independent. I doubt he'll hurt the R's more than the D's if he manages to siphon off any real percentage of votes.

Oh, he admits that he didn't think that he could win a Democratic primary. The GOP primary was just him and Herman Badillo, who was underfunded. And the GOP liked that Bloomy would pick up the tab for his own run.

Exactly, he would take away a chunk of Hillary's vote total in 2008.

I was thinking the same thing. That would divide the left somewhat and the Republicans could win if they select a real conservative.
