The strategic fact is, they are a regional navy, not a blue water navy. They are jonesing to put a carrier to the bottom or sink an attack sub. That's the last thing they want to do. This is not to sell them short-NEVER underestimate an enemy. Pearl Harbor taught us that. But they aren't ten feet tall.

It seems as we'd would already have Identified and Sonar-Tagged all of Iran's submarines (between us and the Brits) ... with additional 688-class subs lying in wait outside of every Iranian Naval Submarine base.

Yes, the land-based Silkworms and Sunburn missiles are a threat, but I'm sure that any U.S attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would include a coincidental "massive" attack on all Iranian land-based missiles.

Furthermore, with the two years the US-Great Britian have had to prepare for this genuine "Shock and Awe" military strike, and the massive amounts of intel gathered, we'll be in a great position to effectively "zero-out" all of Iran's power-projection forces in 24-36 hours, and maybe even less time than that.

The United States is still the premier military power on the planet, although (at this stage) very frustrated by our lack of complete success in Iraq (because we can't use massive military action against civilians).

However, Iran presents the United States a first-rate opportunity to really show everyone (including North Korea and Chavez) that we STILL have a glorious abundance of global ass-kicking power.

I think that an overwhelming 500 Cruise Missile strike (launched over 24 hours), plus massive air strikes by the B2 Bomber fleet, and our considerable air assets (forward-deployed in Iraq) ... would completely decimate Iran's naval and missile assets.

Iran's (certainly already prepared) counterstrikes would combine ICBM launches against critical Persian Gulf oil facilities (which the United States, interestingly enough, might secretly wish to be heavily damaged, especially for Saudi Arabia) ... with a massive Shiite rebellion in Iraand Saudi Arabia ... and activating Terrorist Sleeper Cells across Europe and the United States.

I'm sure the Americans and British intelligence agencies have spent the last two years (urgently) attempting to Identify and Tag ALL of these Iranian Terrorist Sleeper Cells ... just as we've been doing for the Iranian diesel submarine fleet.

The final thought ?

Iran has spent billions urgently trying to insanely piss-off the United States and Israel, subjugate the "moderate" Arab regimes, and torpedo the United States's attempt to bring westen-style Democracy to Iraq.

I for one would NOT want to be on President Bush's "genuine" "whup-ass" list, given the strategic miltary might at the President's disposal.
