The Founding Fathers could never have envisioned a world with cell phones.

The fundamental concepts they understood and warned about have never changed.

If you aren't doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about. They wouldn't be listening to you just for the fun of it.

Though I agree with you, for now. What happens if the government outlaws something that today is normal and legal? What happens if they outlaw conservatism? Or Christianity. What happens if at home you speak less than approvingly of a gay?

Do you remember what the DA in Fla. did to Rush, looking for any proof that Rush did something wrong? Imagine the government doing that to you, because you didn't toe the party line.

Your at home and say something against Rosie O'Donuts. Another time someone cuts you off in traffic, and in the privacy of your car, which your alone in, you make a comment about the person, who happens to be of a racial persuasion other than white male. Maybe your praying with a friend, and you pray something that somebody somewhere takes offense with.

Now the government comes along, because they don't like your politics or viewpoints, and they subpoena your cell phone records to find something, anything, to attack you on.

Can't happen? Time to wake up and smell the coffee. We're just a few steps away from it.

Erode a little freedom here. Become a little complacent there. Become a little desensitized here and there to societal attacks.

Re your tag line, democracies will perish entirely anyway. They always degenerate into mob rule.

I think the phones with the "push to talk" are what are doing it. i'm not sure motorola or Nokia have that. The whole OnStar thing it funny too. Briliant, but funny. I'm glad our side is using this, and you know that if this is just know getting out for all to know, we have moved on to bigger and better methods.

Again, if you are innocent then you don't have to worry, right?

I hope you are kidding. If not, this is beyond comment and you are a lost cause.

Well, yes. I didn't know why he isn't a member any longer. I didn't want to get myself in trouble by mentioning his name until I figured out what was going on.

Kaplan's opinion said that the eavesdropping technique "functioned whether the phone was powered on or off."

Now I know to remove the battery from that damned thing.

Nor cars, space travel, or radio and television. Or travel by steamship, or trains, or aeroplane. And your point is... what, exactly?

That communication has gotten faster, and more efficient? So the Bill of Rights should be thrown out wholesale because of technological advances?

The Founders could not have envisioned firearms with bullets and powder combined into single cartridges. Should they be banned because the Founders couldn't see every advance that was coming?

Should you give up your car because the Founders couldn't concieve of horseless transport?

Need I go on?

.....just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted -- and you create a nation of law-breakers --

Red light cameras. No smoking in your home or in your car. Your kids late to school? Arrest warrant!

I'm not a big fan of the "objectivists," because they deny the spiritual component of man, but Ms. Rand was on to something here.

My point was that I don't think the Founding Fathers could have envisioned the electronic eavesdropping thing - period - to the point where everyone's private conversations are now sort of automatically invaded by NSA/Echelon.

>>As long as the battery is out, the phone is dead.

Battery?

There's lots of energy available from other sources.

Think of the Cell phone as a large RF ID tag.

To power up a cell phone with electromagnetic induction, you would need to design it with a coil or antenna to receive the external energy and properly direct it to the phone's circuitry. For instance, I use an electronic card key to get in the door at work. The reader gives off an AC electromagnetic field, and the card key is mostly a coil to receive that energy. I seriously doubt if any electromagnetic field would be able to power up a normal cell phone. It could be done, but you'd have to design the phone to do this. Who knows?

I didn't say the phone was powered up.

I simply pointed out that removing a battery does not necessarily render a device "dead".

An RF ID tag is closer to what I'm thinking of than your key card is.
