The higher areas between where they were last known to be and their hotel for the night are snowbound in the winter. Many of those twisty roads are not maintained during the winter. A couple of families have gone onto a "road they saw on the map" and got trapped. One guy was alone in his camper, and they found him when the weather thawed, about 8 days after he died.

I think it was just last year when a larger group got into trouble in the same manner.

The snow gets deep enough and unaware drivers don't see the signs that state "road not maintained".
