I understand and agree with you, but were Johanns the Secretary of State rather than the lower-level Agriculture Secretary, he might stand more of a chance. I can't stomach any of the 3 leading candidates at the current time.

I read something about Joe Shell a couple of years ago which said he was still alive, and there is no Joseph Shell of the right age listed in the Social Security Death Index, so I would assume he is still lving.

One other thing was that Keating was being considered for Attorney General. Joe Albaugh, who was then head of FEMA had a brother who was in charge of the Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce in the Silicon Valley whose function was to try and lure high tech firms to relocate to Oklahoma.

When Keating took over as governor he fired Albaugh's brother. Well, when Keating thought he was going to be the next AG Joe killed that deal. Paybacks are hell in politics.

That was a story that was related to me from inside the Oklahoma State Government.

The way he insulted the voter's for not electing his wife to congress was the final straw for me. I have been looking for the quote but thus far unsuccessful in finding it.

Hawaii was originally called for Nixon, but went to Kennedy in a recount. I'm calling shenanigans.

If Frank Keating was "nothing but a politician" and "just wanted to get back to Washington," wouldn't it have made more sense for him to run for Largent's vacated House seat himself instead of supporting his wife's bid? Frank Keating would have annihilated Sullivan in the primary (in fact, Sullivan probably wouldn't have run).

Mrs. Keating ran for Congress because she wanted to go to Congress, not because Frank Keating needed to ride on her coattails in order to move to Washington.

So Johanns can carry Nebraska? So could Charles Manson if he was the GOP presidential nominee. And I'm not so sure that Johanns would run that strongly in the few swing states that are nearby, such as Iowa and Colorado. I'd much rather have Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty as our presidential nominee---he's from a Dem-leaning swing state that would probably move to our column if he ran, he should run strongly in neighboring swing states Wisconsin and Iowa, and his blue-collar background and social conservatism would give the Democrats nightmares in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

But I agree with DJ that Herman Cain would make an excellent candidate as well---and he's a former Nebraskan to boot! : )

Unfortunately, in securing his reelection, Pawlenty may have gone to the dark side. The GOP also, sadly, lost its proverbial shirt on his watch, too. He may be moving into Bill Owens territory. :-(

The GOP lost legislative elections during Owens's watch in 2004, when it was winning just about everywhere else. 2006 was a bloodbath for the GOP, and I don't think you can blame the party's losses in MN on Pawlenty.

No, not entirely his fault, but a Governor does have to shoulder some of the responsibility. We held most of the statewide offices, and now it will only be him and his Lieutenant come January, along with badly diminished numbers in the legislature. The only reason he didn't end up Ehrliched is because Mike Hatch's running mate's gaffe probably saved his butt. That flake used to be a Republican officeholder. Cute, but dumb as a stump. Good thing she ended up on the bad guys' side.

In any event, it stands in stark contrast to gains made on the watch of Sanford, Perdue and Riley in AL, despite the national blowout.

That's an unfair comparison, since SC, GA and AL are heavily conservative states in which the GOP was underrepresented in the state legislature, while MN is a Dem-leaning state (although not as heavily Dem state as it used to be) that went into the 2006 elections with a GOP overrepresentation in the state legislature.

Perhaps, although I think the GOP was represented quite nicely enough in the MN legislature. Ah, well, it was a fiasco nearly everywhere. Hopefully we shall recover...

I think Keating had visions of something else like the move for presidency he checked out.

He has been a lobbyist for some deal I saw. In fact the Republican who ran for State Treasurer made a terrible mistake by saying "I served as State Treasurer and worked with Frank Keating".

That killed his chances of getting the votes of a lot of Republicans I am friends with.
