In a statement released for World AIDS Day Friday, Mr. Annan called the HIV/AIDS pandemic the greatest challenge of this generation. But he said the international community has finally begun to take the fight against the virus seriously.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice released a statement that the United States mourns the more than 25 million people who have died of AIDS (since the first case was reported 25 years ago) and remembers the more than 39 million people who are currently living with HIV.
President Bush and the first lady are hosting a meeting on World AIDS Day at the White House Friday.
The president has said marking the event helps underscore U.S. commitment to fight the pandemic with compassion and decisive action.

U.N. officials say infection rates are increasing in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
Here's wishing a happy AIDS Day to all my fellow FReepers!
Has anyone else had a hard time finding AIDS Greeting Cards in the stores? Guess that's the price you pay for waiting until the last minute.
So, take some time to remember the REAL meaning of this beautiful holiday:
Thank God for all the AIDS you don't have, wish AIDS on all your enemies, tell an AIDS joke to an unsuspecting co-worker, hang a condom by the window before bed and hope for a U.N. granted windfall.
But most of all, pick a designated driver when hoisting a few AZT cocktails.

If what I just wrote made you sad or angry,
it was probably just a joke.
Happy AIDS day, fellas!

"Art actions"?
The memorable line from Porky's applies here:
"Wear your condom!"
"Love me two times, babe.
Once for tomorrow
And once cause I got AIDS."
-Dead Milkmen
I'm doing my part in the battle against aids, I am in a long term monagamous marriage with a life time commitment with the same woman.
If everyone followed my example, aids would disappear soon enough.

Bigot!! Homophobe!! /s
I think AIDS is a terrible disease, and have compassion. But, I think there is too little discussion about the behaviors that spread this cruel disease.
If there's any good news about AIDS, it's that we could drastically reduce it by changing the behaviors that spread it. It isn't spread by casual contact, there are specific behaviors, some of which I'm too squeemish to mention, that spread it. If you avoid those behaviors, your chances of getting AIDS are close to zero.
To me this is very simple....if you don't want aids or don't want to spread the disgusting disease then DON'T HAVE SEX UNLESS YOU ARE MARRIED AND HAVE BEEN TESTED!!!! duhhhhhhhhhh
"I cannot say enough about that irreverent Owl_Eagle sumbitch. Now commence to drinking."
Actually, another way to combat AIDS is to hand out condoms to rapists in places like the Congo. As everyone knows, the first thing a rapist does before raping a 12-year-old is remember to apply his condom.
Foolproof ways to minimize YOUR risk of getting AIDS!
- Don't stick your you-know-what in men's butts.
- Don't stick your you-know-what in men's anything, actually.
- Come to think of it, don't stick your you-know-what in that drug-ridden meth skank hooker (any orifice). And don't share needles with her, either.
- OK. Try this: don't stick your you-know-what in ANYTHING until you find a nice girl who's clean, tested, and loves you, and you marry her. And then don't stick it in anybody else while you're still married.
Happy AIDS Day! Now get out there and exchange those presents!

Kofi Annan agrees. Now drink.
You or anyone else who makes statements like this are nothing more than sick people and no better then the westboro baptist group
Just for that, I'm going to say something hurtful to you when you post your anual "Global Warming Awareness Day" thread.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Far more people die of diarrhea every year--a disease easily preventable with water treatment tablets and/or basic public health and engineering solutions--yet there are no splashy conferences, fundraisers or celebrity spokesmen for the cause of diarrhea prevention.
Where are the Hollywood stars and politicians with their brown ribbons on World Diarrhea Day?
Is AIDS Day a holiday in San Francisco?
Every day is AIDS Day in San Francisco; it's the gift that keeps on giving.
