SAN FRANCISCO: 35 officers may be punished for video skits

Fong may fire or suspend Bayview police for tapes she views as racist, sexist -

Seven San Francisco police officers face possible firing for their roles in producing video skits last year that Mayor Gavin Newsom and Chief Heather Fong denounced as racist and sexist, department officials said Thursday.

Twenty-eight other officers could be suspended for a maximum of 10 days apiece if found guilty of misconduct charges, police said.

The video skits, some of which Newsom and Fong made public last December, were created for the Bayview Station's 2005 Christmas party. One skit depicted an officer running over a homeless woman, and another showed a male police officer pulling over a female motorist and ogling her.

At the time, Fong said the videos showed "shameful and despicable acts" by officers while on duty and immediately suspended two dozen officers. All were later reinstated while the disciplinary investigation went forward.

The seven officers facing the most serious penalties will have their cases heard by the Police Commission, which could impose lengthy suspensions or fire them. The other 28 officers will have their cases heard by Fong.

Police officials would not reveal details of the charges or name any of the officers, citing a recent state Supreme Court decision that keeps police disciplinary proceedings and outcomes confidential.

But they said the officers had violated department policies governing general conduct, duties of supervisors, rules covering the use of computers and other equipment, and rules against discrimination and harassment.

What will Chiefette Fong and the San Francisco Politburo do when no cops are willing to work in Baghdad-by-the-Bay?

It sounds like it might be funny, but also pretty darn foolish of a cop to participate in, on camera, using city squad cars. Serves the dopes right.

Obviously, they don't understand the concept of (dare I use the term) "black humor". People in this line of work exhibit a bizarre sense of humor in order to deal with the stuff seen day to day, and if they can't share it among themselves, that's unreal. I'm so sick of how PC everything must be lest it might offend somebody, somewhere. It wasn't meant for public consumption, but they should have known better, I know.

There are already too many places in this country where good cops won't work because they know that the brass will hang them out to dry if they look at somebody wrong. That leaves slackers and crooks wearing badges, which only degrades respect for the police even more.

Yep. But on the bright side, you can make fun of white conservative straight males.

Baghhdad-by-the-Bay?

When Herb Caen coined that phrase it was intended as a compliment. My, how things do change.

Hey, I'm for a good laugh. But those knuckleheads should not be surprised when the adults were not amused.

Serves the dopes right.

Being fired? losing a pension, for a stupid stunt? Punished, yes. executed? no. The punishment should fit the crime and this was no crime.

Who's saying it was a crime? No one's throwing them in jail. People get fired from jobs every day. They can get another job. "Executed"? Are you kidding?

Hopefully, they'll think twice before doing anything so stupid again.

It seems to me that the inquiry should about the use of city equipment and behavior while on the clock, not centered on so-called 'offensive content'. As usual, the wild-eyed left fails to have the slightest grasp of what constitutes free speech when its ox is getting gored. But I agree if these officers did it on the clock with city equipment, there's been misconduct.

Obvioulsy, these police officers did not know that the only groups that can be made fun of in SF are Republicans, heterosexuals, whites, and anyone that is in the Bush administration. The more I hear from the "Golden" State, the more I believe that Lex Luthor was on to something in "Superman: The Movie."

San Francisco its mayor and city council are the most anti-American racist bunch that I have ever seen. So how can they call someone racist?

Maybe a sense of humor would help.

I am not very pro-police, but this is overkill. These police should be left alone.

The total lack of a sense of humor is also found in NAZIs.

True, but where are you going to find those in San Francisco?

I actually have a sense of humor. But if these men behave like boys, they're going to be treated like boys, not men.
