SUCHITEPEQUEZ, Guatemala -- Outside his aqua-colored concrete house here, Rene Alvarez Rosales paused under an almond tree to answer questions about a subject with which he has surprising familiarity: Governor Mitt Romney's Belmont lawn.
For about eight years, Rosales said, he worked on and off landscaping the grounds at Romney's home, occasionally getting a "buenos dias" from Romney or a drink of water from his wife, Ann...

I'm all for deporting illegal alines, but to be fair, I think he hired a company that hired illegals. It's unreasonable to expect people to check the legal status of every worker of every company they pay to do a service for them.
That name should've been a dead giveaway.
ouch!
This is really gonna hurt Mitt
Mention a good Republican as a Presidential Candidate, and the Boston Globe goes to Guatemala to look for someone who cut his grass. The Globe can't look at a suspicious land deal by Harry Reid, though, can they?
These guys aren't furniture delivery people who show up at your door. These workers were on his property 1-2 times a week. You'd think at some point he'd be curious.
You know, I think many of us have been in that situation. For example, the landscaper who has done work for us is this wonderful Italian guy (born and raised in the USA) and at times he would bring one of his Mexican workers who was from Mexico. If we hire someone, how do we always know they employ an illegal unless we ask.
He's not people...he's a government official.
That's why we have the Herald and the internet :)
Before you all jump on this one with both feet you should remember that Tom Tancredo had a very similar situation.
When he remodeled his home it was found that the company he hired used illegal aliens and Tancredo was accused of knowingly using illegal labor.
Status and a backround check. Ask the Smart family how they feel about not doing it now.
Isn't there supposed to be a State Trooper around to make sure that no one, including the Globe is stalking the Governor?
Good grief! How horrible .. the Gov didn't know the landscapers were hiring illegals ..?? This is just outrageous! A Gov is supposed to know everything!
Our company hires landscapers too .. and we don't check each of their employees to find out if they're legal. It's not our responsibility to find out that information. I would presume the Gov would have no reason to even check out that information.
If people are going to whine about something .. maybe they better choose more carefully. And .. all these little nit-picky things are just because the liberals are in a panic that Romney just might have a chance to get elected president.
Oh, please. Every landscaper that every politician in every state in the nation uses are composed of illegals. Everyone knows it. But of course only a GOP guy gets hit.
Better that than sued if one of his laborers commits a crime and it's discovered the employer didn't conduct any kind of a backround check.
"What's he gonna do? Ask if the workers are illegal aliens?"
What's wrong with asking the owner if his workers are documented? Race isn't the issue.
For the record, I have a lawn service that uses college kids (all legal), it's not that hard.
