Pilot ejected, and has been located.
I used to park near the end of the runway when they were flying the wing in. Pretty darned impressive.
Yes, that's the one, here in Nashville, and that was the complaint that he was showing off for his folks. I had forgotten the name of the pilot, but was able to find more articles on the incident below. There was some controversy that LCDR Bates should not have been flying, as he had just had a prior incident where he crashed the same make plane (F-14) into the Pacific. I had forgotten it killed 5 people in total, including a LT aboard the flight, the Newsoms, and a family friend, and destroyed 3 homes. Bates and Lt. Higgins were, ironically, heading back en route to Miramar. I remember it being particularly unnerving, as all Bates had to have banked slightly to the left upon takeoff, and yours truly (who was sleeping at the time) could've been a torched human pop tart.

In this photo, you can see the homes:

If you note the upper left-hand corner, the road there is I-24. Had they missed the houses and crashed into the interstate, it might've been far worse.
Yes, and as kerry proved beyond a shadow of doubt, he could never fly one of those and it turned he was a rotten operator of a swift boat. Any fighter Pilot faces death ever time he starts those engines. Cheers for Our President and GOD Bless him!!
An old friend of mine, one of those guys with an uneven T/O - Landing count, had to punch out of af F-100 north of Madrid around 1960. I asked him what he thought when he realized the A/C had died.
His answer; "Throttle, Bottle, Left, Right, Squeeze".
The B-1 probably flew again, but not the aircrew!
FIghtertown USA!
Look at your two word response to the article. You failed Communication 101.
Wow!
I've seen those things come in low but that's ridiculous!
I was stationed at NAS Miramar in 1961 after a round trip of South America aboard the USS Kitty Hawk CVA-63 with the CAG-11 Air Group; VA-115. We had the last of the prop-job airplanes, Skyraiders! Our squadron was offloaded in Gitmo while the Kitty Hawk did its sea trails for six weeks.
Look at yourself in the mirror and you will see a dork.
Yup. My child's kindy teacher lost her son in law when his fighter plane crashed in Indiana 2-3 years ago. He left 3 boys. The youngest hadn't been born, yet. He was also a FedEx pilot.
Yes, Miramar is the Marine (formerly Naval) Air Station in San Diego. Many of the functions of the old El Toro base, near me, moved there when El Toro closed.
Everybody in the military has a home state or territory... which may not be where Uncle sends ya.
The F-16 pilot is listed as "duty status whereabouts unknown," which is a euphemism for MIA or death not confirmed.

Guarded by a Marine, A3D usually standing ready on the hangar deck with pilot and weapon on-board.
The book "The Right Stuff" said the Navy pilot flight fatality rate is 23%. No shortage of applicants to have that kind of pleasure, though, however long it lasts...
We loved Yuma! I'd move back there in a heartbeat were it not for dh's career. Although, I'd have to give the illegal nightmare more of a look since I hear Yuma's become one of the gateways into the US.
Seriously, I miss the dry heat.
Welcome to FR.
We are a Navy family. My husband ex, one of our boys is an active duty officer.
