Montreal — Eradicating child poverty and controlling guns are high priorities for Liberal party activists.
Lowering the age of consent for anal sex between teens and legalizing marijuana may be good ideas, but not high priorities, delegates indicated Wednesday at the opening of the Liberal convention.
Liberals did not swerve too far from the centre of the road in a sparsely attended social policy workshop debate.
Youth delegates grumbled that they could not get out the vote for the marijuana resolution because many young Liberal activists are still taking school exams and can't get here until the weekend's main event, picking a new leader.
Older delegates, many of them retired, found it easier to get to Montreal for the first round of policy debates.
The social policy workshop gave the nod to 19 resolutions. They including calls to legalizing marijuana and to fix the anomaly in the law that allows teens to engage in other forms of sexual activity with their peers, but not anal sex, even though that could be seen to discriminate against gay teens.
But when it came time to pick the three top priority resolutions, sex and pot did not make the cut.
Those resolutions will not go to the full convention when policy votes are held Thursday.
Instead, workshop participants said by an overwhelming majority that eradicating child poverty is their highest priority.
“Child poverty is a national disgrace, plain and simple,” delegate Maggie Laidlaw from Guelph, Ont. said. “Make this a priority.”
The resolution proposes several strategies, including increasing the child tax benefit for parents and increasing the availability of early education and child care programs.
The convention is being held in downtown Montreal, not far from the Dawson College shooting tragedy earlier this year.
In that incident, 25-year-old Montreal Kimveer Gill walked into the school Sept. 13 carrying several weapons, including a 12 gauge shotgun and a 9 mm pistol. He opened fire, killing one woman and wounding 20 others, before killing himself.
Several delegates made reference to the incident during discussions of toughening gun laws.
The resolution that is going to the full plenary would ban semi-automatic weapons.
Yep lowering the age of consent for anal sex is a high priority all right.

The article says that it's discriminatory against gay teens to not lower the age of consent for anal sex activity.
you just shake your head after a while at some of this stuff. Maybe that's what they want, they want us people who think this stuff is absurd to withdraw from the political process in disgust. Which leaves them free to pursue these things.

I am agasp. The left has truly become deranged in its departure from Christian values. This is not even compassionate toward the teens involved, who will die in larger numbers from AIDS if this is condoned.
Liberals have the same mindset everywhere. I expect to see the Democrats launch the same agenda -- guns bad, anal sex good.
Yep it's unbelievable what we see happening. So many barriers have been broken down over the years that now the barrier to break down are perceived archaic laws against teen anal sex.
And after they break down that barrier, what comes next? What's the next frontier? Decriminalize student teacher sex, require nudity in public, decriminalize any prostitute type activity, full frontal nudity on TV, adult child sex to be encouraged (after all, young people need mentors).
I hate to think where it will go, but anyone, even liberals, if intellectually honest, must admit that some of this was unthinkable years ago.

Well, shoot, why don't they just put it all together? Legalize child prostitution! They can lower the anal age and get rid of child poverty all in one fell swoop if they just require sodomites to pay their victims up front. I feel a Modest Proposal like diatribe welling up within me...
