Romney Hires DeLay Spokesman [Governor Moves Closer To Presidential Run]

BOSTON -- Gov. Mitt Romney, moving closer to a presidential run, has hired Tom DeLay's former spokesman, according to a top Romney adviser who spoke on the condition of anonymity pending a formal announcement.

Kevin Madden, a New York state native who most recently served as press secretary for House Majority Leader John Boehner, will serve as primary spokesman for the presidential committee that Romney is expected to create within the next three weeks, the adviser said.

The governor is expected to file paperwork establishing some sort of presidential campaign committee by mid-December. Romney is planning to base his campaign in an office building in the city's North End.

Madden was chief spokesman for DeLay before the Texas congressman resigned last year after being indicted on charges of conspiracy in fundraising. He then shifted over to Boehner's office in February.

The Republican Party lost its majorities in the House and Senate this month and Boehner is now poised to become the House minority leader.

Madden served as a spokesman for the Bush-Cheney 04 campaign from September 2003 to November 2004. From 2001 to 2003, he served as communications director and a senior adviser to Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y.

I'll never vote for an opportunistic finger-in-the-wind schmuck like Romney.

Actually, I believe Romney is probably the best candidate in 08.Besides being reasonably conservative, he's telegenic and glib.Regrettably, most people base their judgements on candidates on those sort of superficial things-particularly women (donning my flame suit).

Are you kidding me?

The Big Dig was started more then a decade before Romney took office.

There are reasonable reasons to oppose Romney, this ain't one of them.

You really ought to visit Massachusetts. Even Reagan would have been a RINO there, if he could have been elected at all.

How effective was Tom DeLay's PR guy at PR in the past?

Tom DeLay did a lot of good things. But his PR and ability to present his case to the public was pathetic.

The Mitt haters might like it that Mitt has hired someone with a lousy track record.

What is strange about Newt, Giuliani, McCain and Romney?

The Mormon is the only one to have 1 wife.

Now THAT's hysterical. Maybe Romney can use it in one of his speeches.

"PR" and "Republican" seem to be mutually exclusive, RR excepted.

The Romney bashers would rather have a stuffed suit like George Allen be president as long as he says bad stuff about abortion every State of the Union. They don't care that he is better on the war than most pro-lifers.

No kidding. I'm from MA, and if Romney is the Republican candidate for President, I'll vote for him.

I'm not for Romney, but considering what George Allen did to himself, maybe it was wise for Romney to hand over the MA governorship WITHOUT a fight. Nevertheless, the Democrats won in both MA (normal) and VA (becoming increasingly likely).
