I understand they charge a TV tax for each set you have in your home. Do they come around to check?
Ah, a grey area!
If you have a bunch of sets but live as a family you only need one license.
If, however, you live in a house converted into flats (as many places in London are) you are expected to have one license per set!
They send out shiny "detector vans" which check whether signals are going into an "unlicensed" house.
Place I moved into a year or so ago had a guy living here who apparently hadn't paid it.
I had to make several phone calls to avoid a court order for entry being served.
I really might be movin' to Montana soon!
