Um.....because it's 18 months old? At this point I would no longer call it "assistance", I would call it "government handout for people who won't help themselves".

failed to adequately explain why it ended the 18-month housing assistance programMaybe because after 18 months people should be able to pull their heads out of their asses and get on with life?
Just a thought

Its been 15 months, thats enough time to get your life back on track and get your plan of action in place to take care of yourself.
The only person I'd still have sympathy for is the homeowner who can't get his house rebuilt due to a myriad of reasons who is making both mortgage payments and temporary housing payments.
To: 2banana
I think it is a good idea as long as the judge is willing to foot the bill.

18 months? That's not temporary assistance; that's welfare! I'd like the good judge to explain to me why I have to buy a home with my own money but Katrina victims can have theirs perpetually subsidized by extorting the country's taxpayers. In any case, a federal judge has no business deciding whether or not a federal government program gets funded - that's Congress' responsibility.

I thought they had finished that months ago.
If you take the total number of applicants, and divide it into the cash and the assistance in kind that was actually distributed, and apportion it equally on a per-capita basis, these people would have had a pretty good payday.
The problem comes with the "equally on a per-capita basis", because obviously, some of the persons to whom it was distributed, got a great deal more than others.
On average everybody came out OK.
Declare victory over this national emergency and go home.
Isn't this the solution being advocated in Iraq?
