At a recent White House reception for freshman members of Congress, Virginia's newest senator tried to avoid President Bush. Democrat James Webb declined to stand in a presidential receiving line or to have his picture taken with the man he had often criticized on the stump this fall. But it wasn't long before Bush found him.
"How's your boy?" Bush asked, referring to Webb's son, a Marine serving in Iraq.
"I'd like to get them out of Iraq, Mr. President," Webb responded, echoing a campaign theme.
"That's not what I asked you," Bush said. "How's your boy?"
"That's between me and my boy, Mr. President," Webb said coldly, ending the conversation on the State Floor of the East Wing of the White House.
Webb was narrowly elected to the U.S. Senate this month with a brash, unpolished style that helped win over independent voters in Virginia and earned him support from national party leaders. Now, his Democratic colleagues in the Senate are getting a close-up view of the former boxer, military officer and Republican who is joining their ranks.
If the exchange with Bush two weeks ago is any indication, Webb won't be a wallflower, especially when it comes to the war in Iraq. And he won't stick to a script drafted by top Democrats.

It will be a long six years.
"He's doing great, Mr. Pres. Why, last time I saw him, I said, 'Hey, son! How's the war? Now come over here and let me s*&* on that d%%$!! It's a little local custom I picked up over in Asia."
Very unprofessional.
Kingfish.
YEah that.
I had hopes he would have some class, but those are now dashed. What a POS. What an absolute POS.
The Dems will pull the old Marine back into line in short time.
"That's between me and my boy, Mr. President"
Real classy response to the Commander in Chief.
I live in Virginia and the press elected this guy. He honestly believes that once he gets in office he will take over the whole party and run it his way.
What he really wants to to be president. He has no intention of representing Virginia voters or voting according to Virginia's needs. He only represents himself.
This should be an interesting 6 years.
...who got his face packed by Oliver North.
Congratulations Virginia, you voted for that scumbag, now you've got him for six years.
And the rest of America says "thanks for nothing", fools!
Class would have been running against Allan in the Republican Primary.
But instead he chose to join the enemy because its easier to get good press and win.
He will be to the Democrats what McCain often is to the Republicans - a loose cannon with only the slimmest measure of part loyalty.
Leadership, statemanship, honor, integrity, are simply not in the psyche of these demonrats.
Info?
Hey, a lot of us here voted AGAINST him. That was a slim victory mk, it wasn't some effin' landslide.
Look at the bright side of the Democrats winning the Senate majority with this clown Webb:
WE DON'T HAVE TO LISTEN TO TWO YEARS OF HOW REPUBLICANS STOLE THE ELECTION AGAIN, DEMANDS FOR INVESTIGATIONS, CRIES OF "COUNT EVERY VOTE", AND LAWSUITS!
