Tying Rummy's hands was a huge blunder

Ah no that would be another media manufactured myth about Iraq. People really need to learn the diffeence between Counter Insurgency and Conventional War. What would be a blunder would be to use Conventional War doctrine to fight an Asymetrical War. The Russians followed your doctrine in Afganistan. How did that work out for them?

How did you glean from my statement that I am in favor of conventional war tactics in fighting an insurgency? I am specifically referring to the facts that a) W. shifted primary responsibility for Iraq from the defense dept. to the state dept. (even though state somehow never gets the blame when things go wrong); and b) W. said again and again and again that Syria and Iran would suffer severe consequences if they continued to send terrorists over the border, but never delivered even under the doctrine of hot pursuit.

Rummy was HARDLY a supporter of Conventional War tactics, in Iraq or elsewhere -- quite the opposite.
