I'm having an unpleasant memory of the last wine tasting I went to - there was a Riesling room and a Burgundy room. The Australian and New Zealand Rieslings were excellent. Going from that to tasting French burgundies was like being kicked out of the honeymoon suite into the gutter outside a sewage treatment plant.

I have always preferred California wines, but have recently been trying Australian wines. Very good indeed.
