Fact 1: The Republicans do not have a clear, strong candidate that can effectively use a Reagan strategy to go over the heads of the MSM. Guiliani does not appeal to many conservatives despite his impressive record in combating crime and dealing with the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Essentially, a candidate must emerge soon in order to capture enough mind share over the next two years.

Fact 2: If she runs, the MSM will form a gauntlet around Hillary unlike anything we have ever seen. The smallest Republican misstep will be endlessly repeated while the largest Democrat scandal will be buried. We have not yet seen the lengths the MSM will go to to guarantee a Democrat victory. The argument is always made - Hillary will be shown in public forums and debates as the shrewish lier and Machiavellian power-mad dominatrix she is. I don't buy that. If she runs, she will be stage managed in such a way that will make Mother Teressa look like Barbra Streisand.

True... but there isn't a gauntlet large enough to cover her--if you'll pardon the mixed metaphor--baggage. The opposition will make the swiftboating of Kerry look like sandbox play.

In the end, she will be the agent of her own demise. (If she runs, she will, perforce, have to open her mouth.)

As for Giuliani, his strength is precisely that his appeal transcends party.

If missus clinton runs, and if Giuliani is the GOP candidate, conservatives, I believe, will be wise enough this time not to place a de facto vote for a clinton.

Their challenge in both the nominating process and the general election will be to put America's security ahead of doctrinal purity.
