Long Beach teens face hate crime charges By Hector Becerra, November 22, 2006

Los Angeles County prosecutors today filed hate crimes charges against eight black teenagers accused of beating up three white women on Halloween night in a case that has startled and divided Long Beach.

Authorities said they took the action after concluding that the teens attacked and beat the women in the upscale Bixby Knolls area because they were white.

The case has been the subject of a wrenching public dialogue over the last few weeks in the racially diverse city of 460,000, with civil rights groups like the NAACP condemning the teenagers' alleged actions and the city holding a public forum meant to ease tensions. The attack occurred on a block known for fancy Halloween decorations.

According to police, a mob of mostly girls, ages 12 to 17, allegedly hurled racial insults at the women, threw small pumpkins and lemons at them, and then knocked them to the ground with kicks, punches and swings of a skateboard.

The attack left the women, two 19-year-olds and a 21-year-old bloodied and with broken bones, internal bruises and cuts, before a black passerby stopped his car and pulled their assailants away.

"What could have possibly gone through their mind to make them think this kind of behavior was OK?" asked Police Officer Jackie Bezart. The girls, who face felony assault charges, appeared in court today.

Their attorneys said the girls are good students and have no history of violence or criminal behavior. One of the girls won a full athletic scholarship to USC and had represented the United States in a track meet in China, her attorney told the court. He urged the judge to allow the girl out of Juvenile Hall so she could take the SATs.

Perhaps the decades of race baiting opportunists constantly blaming 'whitey' for all the ills of black America have something to do with it.

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, among others, share a portion of the responsibility for this shameful behavior.

The school desegregation fiasco proves inadequate leadership in the black community. They were handed the opportunity to prove whites wrong, who said integration would ruin their schools, by pushing their people to do their best. What a shame.

Thank you for the ping, Sweetie.

Everyone, if you haven't been following this story and would like to know more, here are some more links.

The victims share stories of the attack : here

Long Beach officials want a Hate Crime definition so tight it would not include the Reginald Denny beating in the Rodney King riots: here

Excellent report on the neighborhood "Kumbaya" meeting in which the local councilwoman attacked the media, saying she didn't want this "incident" to get as much coverage as it has; said meeting was NOT supposed to get out beyond those "directly affected" (because surely no one in SoCal needs to know that white teens can be marauded by wild packs of murderous black youths): here

Here is the Long Beach Press Telegram's public spanking of the councilwoman: here

NAACP does a little tap-dancing but condemns the vicious attack: here

Councilwoman Gabelich got elected for her vehement opposition to airport flight increases and noise, in my opinion. I guess she didn't want any bad publicity about the neighborhood after the beatings, which indicates her level of concern for her consituents.

I've always wondered if she is a relative of the late Gary Gabelich, world class auto racer. We used to go watch him at Lion's Dragstrip in the 60's. Of course as more homes were built in that area, the residents complained about the dragster noise until the strip was finally shut down and the property used for something more commercially profitable than keeping kids off the street.

I believe that was her late husband? Yes, I would say that she got elected for her work on the airport. I voted for her myself. She is a nice woman and has a special needs child (adult now). I do disagree with her that this crime doesn't need tons of publicity, though. By hushing it, we condone crimes by some people. We would NEVER have hushed it had the victims been black. I wouldn't be able to get my car out of the garage with the marches by Jesse Jackson and Al.

"I've always wondered if she is a relative of the late Gary Gabelich, world class auto racer."

Rae Gabelich is indeed the widow of the late Gary Gabelich, who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in the early-to-mid '80s. Gary held the world land speed record, which he set at the Bonneville Salt Flats while driving the Blue Flame.

I'd love to see that girl lose her full scholarship after this. But knowing PC the way I do, USC will probably giver her a medal in diversity.

That's interesting that she is his widow. And it's still ironic to me that the noise issue has been a big one for her as it was for her husband, in opposite ways.

With respect to the beatings, it makes me very nervous when councilpersons or other elected officials try to keep something quiet. I understand she didn't wish to have the crime spread all over the media and sensationalized, but given the racial implications, people deserved a complete set of facts. And she needn't have worried, this incident has generated nowhere near the publicity that the opposite type of racially-motivated crime would have engendered. At least Jesse and Al haven't showed up as far as I know, though they'll be supporting the perpetrators, I'm sure.

"Councilwoman Gabelich got elected for her vehement opposition to airport flight increases and noise" Rae has been a great champion for the neighborhoods in regards to her opposition to needless airport expansion. The airport is essentially maxed out in terms of its economic impact to the city. If the number of flights were to double, the airport's impact on the general fund would be relatively modest. However, in terms of its impact on property values, it could potentially be devastating. The big argument now is how to proceed with expansion to accommodate current flight levels. If the financing mechanism for expansion is tied to the general fund, that would be a very financially irresponsible thing to do. The city is still paying for its irresponsible mistake of tying the financing mechanism for the aquarium to the general fund. The aquarium will never pay for itself.

While Rae has been on the right side of the airport issue, she was very wrong about her handling of the Halloween attack.

A quick digression to the airport issue: I have mixed feelings; I'm in another district, but have lived under the flight pattern most all my life. People have been telling us that our property values would be declining with each new airline that has come to town since the early 50's. We were told that the east/west runways would be brought into our neighborhoods.

All I can say is that houses that sold for 10-11K next to the airport in '50 are going for between 600K and 700K, average now. And since every single person in this area knew there was an airport here that might someday expand, why would they complain now?

Of course I'm waiting to see what people will move in to the Douglas properties at the north edge of the airport; I certainly hope they will not complain afterward about the noise:)

Up until JetBlue came to LB, we had approx. 15 flights/day. For a short period of time in the 80's, we were at about 40 flights/day, which is where we are now. At this level, we are just about maxed out when it comes to both the legal noise limit and economic impact. Pro expansion forces would like to see at least a doubling of flights, which I firmly believe would start to take its toll on property values, at least in areas closest to the takeoff/landing footprints. This, I believe, would negate any marginally positive additional economic benefits generated by full-blown expansion. I support modernization of the terminal only if we do it without creating additional capacity for more flights. The only way to do this is to make sure that we do not build additional aircraft parking spaces and to disallow any 2-story structures that could accommodate jetways.

I don't particulary want or need more flights, but would like to not chase off the ones we have. We definitely need to modernize the facilities. I'd like to be able to use them, and what we have now is a joke, though I do love the old building and hope it isn't destroyed.

They should be tried as adults.

Some black males also participated heavily. In fact, from the first stories circulating, it was black males who actually started beating the young white women, and the black girls ganged on. There were thirty-one attackers in all, all black, shouting things at the white girls about hating white people, "I'll beat your white ass", "All whites need a beat-down", "I'll kill your white ass, you mother-fing white bitch," and so on.

It was Larry Elder, a black journalist and SoCal radio talk show host that brought this story to the forefront. The big papers in SoCal hadn't even run the story as of at least ten days after it happened and at that time the DA was saying he saw no reason to prosecute it as a hate crime.

Bunch of racist cowards. They only pull this crap when they're in groups.

Listen, one of these white girls was almost killed. She was in a coma and was apparently blinded in one eye and may suffer permanent brain damage. The other two were also seriously injured but not permanently, as far as I know. This wasn't just some kids hurling pumpkins on Halloween. There were thirty-one attackers, and some were young men. It was one of the most vicious attacks I have ever heard of, and I am retired from 32 years in LE. This was a vicious, evil, hate-filled beat-down based on racial hatred by blacks against whites, and if you think it's an isolated incident, boy have I got a bridge to sell you. Racial hatred of whites now is part of a sizable segment of black culture in America, it's growing, and it's taught to them from the cradle.

But leave it to the LA Slimes to play down the entire matter and not give all the details which are otherwise widely known. They didn't even run the story until the public outcry began as a result of talk radio picking up the story.

As of ten days after the event, the story had only run in two major papers, the Orange County Register (I believe - or else it was San Diego) and - check this out - the Chicago Tribune! Not the LA Times, the largest paper by far in SoCal, not the Long Beach paper, not in San Francisco, not anywhere else in CA!

If the victims had been black, the NYT, the WaPo, the Boston Globe, and every other major newspaper in the country, every news outlet, and every morning talk show would be carrying it day and night. Look at the hoopla they made over the Kramer thing. Big deal. A drunken rant by a Hollyweirdo in response to perhaps one too many black hecklers. Now the hecklers are demanding money because they need it to "heal." Every black race merchant would be on every cable talk show and it would still be going on now, a month after the event. There would be newspaper columns ad infinitum and the congressional black caucus would be calling for special hearings on violence against blacks, even though black-on-white crime is about nine times what white-on-black crime is, with blacks numbering 1/7th of the white population. Adjusted on a per capita basis, blacks commit 50 times more racial crimes against whites than vice versa. 90% of race crime victims are white victims of black perpetrators, and a white is 18 times more likely to be murdered by a black than a black is to be murdered by a white.

But no congressional hearings on that. Why not? Because the hue and cry from the race merchants and their moronic handmaidens in the media would destroy anyone bringing such an issue to the fore.
