My husband and I bought our first home in South San Diego as newlyweds based on the great deal for a large house. Later I got a job as a Customs Inspector at the border, and every morning like clockwork we had thousands of Mexicans crossing the border every morning to take their kids to US schools. They wanted a better (and free) education for their kids in the U.S. They lied on their school paperwork and provided addresses of friends or family to get the kids enrolled. They didn't contribute one cent toward the taxes that support the school. By the time I had a baby of my own I was wiser about why good schools and a safe neighborhood is important for raising a child. I was reading about how poorly the scores were for kids in the local schools, and back then, they held up the entire class to keep pace with the slowest student.

By the time my daughter was school age I had been transferred from San Diego to Orange County. My kids went to better schools and lived in a safer neighborhood. White flight? You bet.
