The White House is reaching out to leading congressional Democrats on the issue of overhauling immigration, hoping to build a bipartisan coalition to support a "guest worker" program and provide a path to legalized status for many undocumented immigrants, lawmakers and administration officials said. President Bush has expressed an eagerness to work with Democrats on the issue in private meetings with lawmakers and in public statements, as he seeks to strike a new tone with Democrats who will be in control of Congress for the final two years of his presidency. Senator Edward M. Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat who is set to take the chairmanship of the subcommittee that oversees immigration issues, has already met with leading Republicans -- including Senator John McCain of Arizona and Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, the Judiciary Committee's top Republican -- to begin crafting a new bill early next year. " They are hoping to have Congress vote on a final immigration bill by mid-2007, according to congressional aides.
Representative Tom Tancredo, a Colorado Republican who leads a group of hard-liners on the immigration issue in the House, said he was dejected in the days after the election and was ready to concede that a comprehensive bill is all but unstoppable. But watching early signs of disunity among Democrats, he said, gives him hope that conservatives can coalesce to defeat anything they view as "amnesty" for undocumented immigrants, despite the formidable power of a White House working in concert with congressional leaders. "Now we've got a fighting chance to stop this," Tancredo said. " They're going to have a tough time constructing a bill that will be able to hold whatever kind of coalition they can put together. You have these various forces pulling at it all ways."

Later, America! It was fun while it lasted!

And as to the loss of the seats, this just means that the republicans cannot spend more becasue the manner they want to grow goverenment by is not going to be agreeable to the democrats and vise versa.
So we have a no loose situation. The two houses will always be fighting and hopfully nothing at all gets passed.
"Woe unto the people when Congess is in session!"
You spite voters ARE one-issue voters. You would sacrifice the WOT for your dissatisfaction with the President and Congress re illegal immigration and border security.
News flash: The border problem did not start with this administration.
But... the problem has grown and the administration has shown favoritism to Mexican invaders, no question. Spiting this is still not worth sacrificing all else, including the "true conservatives" I cited who were dumped.
That doesn't send any message to the ones you call "idiots" other than IDIOTS are the ones sending the "message."
>>bush can be stopped on this. He has been stopped before.<<
Three quarters of the FReepers seem to think that if Bush or the Republican Party wants it then it can only be for the good of America.
I don't see a chance in hell of stopping this socialist bugger from giving anmesty to his favorite 20 million criminal friends.
Well it will be worse when "they" stay home again.

"The bush legacy"
LOL just last year I was reading here that he would be ranked in the top 5 of best presidents ever. Can't wait to see what happens in 2008. Maybe Pataki for Pres whoopee.
We were kept in the dark about his intentions. I don't ever remember hearing about this speech. It clearly shows Bush's predilection towards hispanics as a favored people. Even, it seems, over all other U.S. citizens.
We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture. Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende. For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America. As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico. George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000. |
Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:
In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. Well, you can write the 2008 election post-mortems now.
Of course, the Karl Rove amnesty/open border bots here will be blaming the base, not themselves or the President.
When he bails out of Iraq by means of the Iraq Study Group morons, the next 40 year Democrat dynasty will be set in stone.
"Sure, blame the independents"
Nah I voted for Steele..

Well Iraq was a wonderful thing for us. We got a bad bad man and we gave millions the choice for democracy which apparently they have always hoped for. Now we are only a couple billion in the whole and the dems have taken the government over and probably the white house in 08. SS reform I guess is a forgone conclusion. Fixing our borders not likely to happen.
Just when I feared I would have to mow my own lawn, watch my own kids, and hire an American citizen to build me a house! Jorge came through for me.
O hot dog! Now my boss can hire 5 guys to do my job and work round the clock, which I refuse to do, and pay them all less than I alone, or my neighbor would charge.
This Jorge Boosh, he sure knows what makes us gringos tick! And we won't even have to change our flag, much. Just maybe make the stars green, ¿Qué piensas?
¡Ay Chihuahua! ¿I theenk I like thees NAU too much, no?
Pres. Bush, and his co-President, wave goodbye to the GOP.
I've noted that FR Bushbots have yet to call me on my tagline. I figure it because in their hearts they know its true.
It's two years until the next election, and he ain't running. He is now in a pre-retirement mode, and will be coasting the next two years trying to "leave a legacy", like Clinton.
Start working on the Republican leadership and the RNC and RSCC and tell them the money dries up as of now until they start representing us and not the Chamber of Commerce or Tysons Chicken. The only thing they respond to is money, or lack of it. They really don't give a damn about you.
Also, write to the new Democrats and let them know that their future is in the balance.
