CA: Governor wants to cover all of state's uninsured - 'Meet the Press' remarks raise stakes

Sacramento -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said for the first time Sunday that the goal of his health care reform package includes extending coverage to all 6.7 million uninsured Californians.

In an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," Schwarzenegger again ruled out the possibility of raising taxes to pay for health care expansion and said the cost of services must be brought down.

The governor's comments represent a significant advance in expectations for his health care initiative that began in earnest only a few months ago and so far remains largely a work in progress.

"This is the year where Democrats and Republicans are going to work together to fix our health care problem," Schwarzenegger said.

"First of all, we've got to bring down the health care costs -- we have to make it more affordable to provide health care," he said. "No. 2, we've got to insure everybody. We have 6.7 million people that are uninsured, and we are working right now on various ideas and we are going to bring those ideas together and I'm going to present them in my State of the State address."

After opposing almost every major effort to expand health care coverage during his first three years in office, Schwarzenegger has made overhauling the existing system a priority for his next term.

Administration officials have been meeting behind closed doors since midsummer to consider ideas, and they say the governor has yet to make any decision about specifics.

--snip--

Adam Mendelsohn, Schwarzenegger's communications director, said Sunday that the governor's comments about expanding programs to cover all uninsured should not be considered more than a goal.

As long as Arnold pays the premiums himself, I don't see any problem here.

I thought Arnold was going to keep businesses from exiting CA.

Now all the doctors will be running for the borders.

Arnold Swartzenkennedy should open up his wallet and cover it himself if he feels so strongly about it.

Caught Timmy interviewing the Govinator. The script was written well. Ahnold has gone from Hollyweird superstar, to political know-nothing, to Hollyweird has-been, to political con artist. Schwarzy was impressive on MTP. He is one of the greatest bulls**ters of all-time. LOL

So, Arnie is no liberal. Right. Arnie's plan is big government intrusion and social engineering, at its finest.

This describes the entire current Republican party then, because this is not the only state Republican Governor doing this. It appears this a Republican strategy. Awake, and see the true party you support.

"Awake, and see the true party you support"

I don't support the party, only individual candidates.

As far as the RSCCC, it's been hijacked by Bush and Rove and is no better than the democrat party, socialist, just like Bush!

You just gave RINOs a bad name. Think seriously here FReepers - all of you that voted for this fraud. All of you that thnk this man is better than any dem. This man who now has set your party back a good generation - that's what you did with your vote. Instead of holding out for a real conservative & if not you could have let the liberals kill the states fruture but now we die from a million cuts with a republican. Nice going.

And how will the Governator bring down health care costs where the free market can't? I'd love to hear it because I don't think there's a quick fix for what ails our health care system.

I don't "support" the Republican party. It is a little like a gun being held to your head and then handing your wallet over.

Umm, I am one of those 6.7 million because I just graduated, but you know what? I trust in my ability to gain meaningful employment with health care. I don't petition government when I have a shortcoming and have been unable to provide myself with such care. This state is run by socialists.

We will have to agree to disagree. If one did as you suggest, by the time a "real conservative" was elected, the alternative (Angelides)- an openly communistic shmuck, would have socialized medicine, formally legalized homo marriage, given the illegals drivers' licenses, and raised income taxes even higher than the obscene bond measures that Arnold pushed.

My choice was to have Stalin or Sweden; both bad, but at least with Sweden, it buys me a few years. The California Republicans haven't been able to elect a real conservative for a long time. The last two attempts at it failed miserably. You might say "nice going", but acting like a "Luddite" isn't a good choice either.
