I attended a small, highly selective private college, the President of which recently wrote an article extolling the college's policy of reserving 38% of admissions for students of color and students from economically challenged households. A very small percentage of the alumni of my college are persons of color or economically challenged, which in turn means that the overwhelming majority of alumni children who choose to apply to the college are competing for 62% of the very limited number of admissions slots, not 100% of them.

My wife has dissuaded me from responding to the college's latest contribution solicitation with an inquiry as to how much less productive I have to be for my youngest child to compete for admission on a level playing field. Instead, because it is not clear to me why I should support an institution that discriminates against those whom I love most in this world, I have chosen to reduce my contribution to the college from several thousand dollars per year to nothing at all and to revise my will. Because I believe that most alumni are not aware of this policy, I am considering demanding that full disclosure of it be made to the alumni prior to the next attempt to raise funds from them.
