Less than a week after the election I saw a posting that suggested the difference in the election for the house country-wide was something like 77,000 votes as most of the races were very close.

No, it was a few million votes' difference. Democrats won the nationwide vote 52%-45%. The average Republican winner probably drew many more votes than the average Democrat winner, because a lot of Democrat districts have fewer citzens and/or fewer voters.

its even worse than 52%-45%. the updated numbers have it at 57%-41%. granted this is wikipedia and it may not be totally accurate but if these numbers are true, its a miracle we didnt lose a whole lot more than 30.
