ACLU fights illegal-immigration laws
The Orange County Register ^ | Thursday, November 23, 2006 | EUNICE MOSCOSOCox News Service

WASHINGTON – As small towns across the United States enact tough ordinances to fight illegal immigration, the American Civil Liberties Union is leading a charge to fight the measures in court.

The national civil rights group has joined Hispanic organizations in suing several towns, saying that the laws are unconstitutional and conflict with state and federal immigration and housing statutes. Most of the ordinances target landlords who rent to illegal immigrants and businesses that hire them.

"These ordinances promote and encourage discrimination ... (and) heighten suspicion about anyone who looks or sounds foreign," said Vic Walczak, legal director of the ACLU in Pennsylvania, where one of the most restrictive ordinances was approved in the small town of Hazleton.

The ACLU, together with other groups, challenged the Hazleton ordinance in court. It requires renters to register with city hall so officials can do background checks on them. Landlords renting to people who are not licensed face penalties of $1,000 a day. In addition, businesses found to be employing illegal immigrants could lose their business permit for five years for the first offense and 10 years for the second.

Last month, a federal judge temporarily blocked the Hazleton ordinance and later extended the order. A trial is expected early next year.

The ACLU claimed another preliminary success earlier this month when a federal judge issued a restraining order against an ordinance in Escondido that gives landlords 10 business days to evict illegal immigrant tenants. If found in violation, landlords could face a variety of penalties, including fines up to $1,000 a day, six months in jail, or suspension of their business licenses. The judge put the measure on hold until a preliminary injunction hearing can be held on the matter.

Thanks FlingWing- been wanting to do an article on them for awhile now as they'd been banning pro GOP articles, but when I saw that they are being used for terrorists to recruit- then I knew it had to be done

The ballot I was handed and used to vote said nothing about an ACLU party.

Fascinating Analysis of Leftist Goals, August 13, 2006

Reviewer: N. Sincerity - See all my reviews

A former 1960s radical, Horowitz is well-acquainted with the Leftist mindset. In this book, he strives to explain the modern alliance between left wing progressivists and radical Islamofascists. He argues that this alliance is based on a common desire to destroy Western capitalism. Leftist sympathy with Islamofascist ideas makes no sense from an intellectual point of view, given that countries ruled by radical Islamists are among the most racist, sexist, theocratic states in the world today. However, Leftists have recognized that they can benefit politically from destructive terrorist attacks on the Western world. A West under attack can be made to turn on its leaders in fear and desperation (as they did in Spain after the Madrid train bombings). Only once people reject current government structures can the Left execute its anti-capitalist revolution and build a new reality that mirrors the Leftist view of utopia. The complete and utter idealogical hypocrisy of the Islamofascist-Leftist alliance is distressing, but as Horowitz reminds us, Leftists radicals truly believe the ends justify the means.

If I could enact one single piece of legislation, I'd undue the rights of the ACLU's to the American public's tax dollars.

I absolutely in no way want my tax money going to that filthy, traiterous, and anti-American organization. The leach needs to be severed from the wound. It will shrivel up and die when that day comes because heaven knows no one would voluntarily feed that monster.

Well it was the "true conservatives" who gave nancy and the ACLU power, with their "cut off the nose to spite the face' voting strategy.

Dane, you and FReeper FairOpinion need to stop with this crap. It's getting annoying, listening to you guys complain about "conservatives staying home."

Ditto, plus I also recall the ACLU has been doing this sort of thing since well before the last election. This is just typical OBL drivel designed to make those against the OBL feel as if everything is our fault.

Must be deep pockets money to be had or the ACLU wouldnt be there......

There should be a law that says that lawyers fighting cases involving public moneys paid being paid would get exactly $1 of any money awarded. Overnight, the ACLU would disappear.

That is a great idea. Allow me to state it a bit differently. If a lawyer directly or through a firm accepts any money from the public dole, then the lawyer is not entitled to any part of any award from any cases won. The only money collected is hourly fees. And why not federally regulate the hourly fees to keep lawyers accepting public money even more honest? I am tempted to bug a few of my Congress critters about this, just for grins if nothing else.

Brilliant post.

Basically, the only way to make Communism look good, is to actively subvert Christianity/Capitalism by pulling down it's foundations with both hands, and then saying, "Look! It's Christianity/Capitalism that failed you!!"
