BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Sunni Muslim insurgents blew up five car bombs and fired mortars into Baghdad's largest Shiite district Thursday, killing at least 161 people and wounding 257 in a dramatic attack that sent the U.S. ambassador racing to meet with Iraqi leaders in an effort to contain the growing sectarian war.

I think I would pick Sunni and if they agree that the Kurds are left alone. Sunni's seem to be a little less at religious fanaticism and perhaps will keep our Iran enemies at bay. Hmm, but there's really no way we could do this openly.

"BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Sunni Muslim insurgents blew up five car bombs, killing at least 161 people and wounding 257 in a dramatic attack---. Shiite mortar teams quickly retaliated, badly damaging the Abu Hanifa mosque and killing one person. Eight more rounds slammed down near the offices of the Association of Muslim Scholars, setting nearby houses on fire. Two other mortar barrages on Sunni neighborhoods in west Baghdad killed nine and wounded 21 ----
The United Nations said Wednesday that 3,709 Iraqi civilians were killed in October
,

Whew, I sure am glad that our troops are still stationed in Iraq, an early withdrawal would almost surely set off a civil war. Oh wait, there is a civil war raging already.

Oh well, our genius leaders will pull some other reason out of their arses for our continued presence in Iraq. If brains and/or spines could be found anywhere in Washington, D.C., from the WH to the Senate, we'd either be helping the Sunni's destroy al Sadr's powerful militia, or we'd be siding with the Shiites to crush the sunnis, (and thereby crush a major aid to the insurgency). Or we'd leave that useless armpit of a country and invade Iran. Or we'd just get the hell out of there altogether and let them murder each other. But our fearless leaders have chosen the absolute dumbest thing of all to do, stand around getting picked off by BOTH SIDES of this civil war. Dumb, absolutely DUMB.

We needed to overwhelm Iraq with troops. If we had 400,000 troops, they'll be standing around doing nothing but that's good because insurgents would have no room for a safe have.

After all, in WW2 we had 2 million troops in Western Germany alone by 1946.

Depends on the Sunnis. Osama branches off from Sunnis.

Don't worry: as soon as the filthy, racist, sexist, homophobic Americans are gone this will all settle down.

"We condemn such acts of senseless violence that are clearly aimed at undermining the Iraqi people's hopes for a peaceful and stable Iraq," said Jeanie Mamo, a White House spokeswoman.

Yeah, that should do the trick. /Mega Sarc

So it's look more and more like our troops are targets to keep the peace between the animals that Saddam contained by force. Give the Kurds their own turf and station our Troops there as a strategic Military presence and let the shites and sunni murder each other.

These attacks are being measured in terms of number of rounds fired in less than 100. This isn't a major offensive, but might be played by opportunists to create an illusion of major operation.

It does however, telegraph and expose those with illusions of grandeur and who pose some of the more significant terrorist threats in the area.

Let them expose themselves and play their hands. They are insignificant in reality and arrogance in hiding until they expose themselves.

On The Day of Thanks, I worry that our own media are sapping us of our resolve to win this boondoggle. This is the one drawback to a volunteer military: a complacent and detached citizenry from the horrors of war.

Sadly, a hostile political climate and the 24/7 newscycle make it impossible for us to prosecute any war against this enemy.
Otherwise, we would just be killin' folks.

I will never forget sharing a real iraqi cigarrette with a private at Hartsfeild last year. He was 10 days removed from havin his helmet shot off in Ramadi because he lit a smoke one night. And he broke it down into the most simple terms possible:

"All we have to do is close the borders east and west....GAME OVER....we have the force, we have the technology.....there's just not the will...."
