"Puffer fish" - Fugutoxin [or saxitoxin] is detectable. I'd rather think of some poisonous protein, like mushroom extract.
Maybe the Australian stone fish barb poison.
aminita kills by liver toxicity and massive liver failure. From the reports I have heard, sounds like he had bone marrow failure. Aminita poisoning is rare, but still seen, I think someone would recognize that.
