Half of All US Women Having Abortions Had at Least One Previous Abortion

NEW YORK, United States, November 23, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Almost half of all  women who have abortions in the U.S. have already aborted at least one previous pregnancy, according to a recent report by the research affiliate of Planned Parenthood, the Alan Guttmacher Institute.  In the study entitled Repeat Abortion in the United States, released this month, researchers found that 48.2 percent of women who had abortions between 2001-2001 were obtaining repeat abortions. That included 29 percent who had one previous abortion, 12 percent who had two previous abortions, and 7 percent who were aborting their fourth or more pregnancy.

A majority of women aged 25 or older who had abortions had one or more previous abortions. Women having two or more abortions were almost twice as likely to be aged 30 or older, researchers found.  Women who had three or more prior births were more than twice as likely to have repeat abortions. Of the women who had three or more abortions, 33.8 percent had three or more children. Of women who had one or more prior births, a majority reported one or more previous abortions.

However, 43 percent of women obtaining repeat abortions, both those with children and those without, said they wanted to have (more) children, while almost one quarter said they were unsure.  Thirty-three percent said they did not want (more) children.  Women having repeat abortions were somewhat more likely to be married, cohabiting, or to have been married in the past, than women having their first abortion. The average time span between abortions was found to be three and a half years. Even among women aged 35 or older who had repeat abortions, the average time span between abortions was just over four years.

The more abortions women had, the closer together they occurred. Women who had three or more abortions had repeat abortions within two years of the previous abortion 50 percent of the time.  The study was conducted by researchers Rachel K. Jones, Susheela Singh, Lawrence B. Finer and Lori F. Frohwirth. The report relied on data collected from multiple sources including annual abortion surveillance reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Guttmacher Institute’s Abortion Provider Census, the Guttmacher 2000-2001 Abortion Patient Survey, and the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth.

What ever happened to safe, legal and rare?

Half of All US Women Having Abortions Had at Least One Previous Abortion  >>

that means half of all US women and their sperm donors are being irresponsible and are not using condoms, creating unwanted babies who are murdered in the womb and are contracting and spreading: HIV, syphilis, chlamydea, genital herpes, human papilloma virus, etc.

Oh, and guess who is funding planned parenthood? We are, the taxpayers of the USA. Who appropriates the money? The republican, pro-life, religious men and women in congress who vote "aye" for Title X funding year after year.

If I read it correctly, the article doesn't say anything about the proportion of US women who had abortion. The article only talks about women who have had abortion in the past might do it again.

Wow..are you going to get flamed!

What is with the criticism of Planned Parenthood? At least they provide sexual cousneling and explain birth control and offer birth control services to low income women.

Other than hooping and hollering about "safer "sex education and birth control education in the high schools and junior highs...and insisting on 'abstinance only " programs, the Republicans are not helping this situation very much.

The Catholic church does not even condone condoms for anyone. are we going to go back to the turn of the century?

Using abortion as "birth control" is terrible, but we sure are not dealing with getting info and help to women who do not want abortions.

yes, that's what the title indicates, 1/2 of them (one who had an abortion) will have another abortion, repeat offenders.

Truly sad, I just cannot comprehend the cold heartedness of ending a defenseless little life.

Having gone through the still birth of what would of be my oldest child 20 years ago, I can say this is something I can't understand.

The remarkable thing is my wife is now 8 month's pregnant with our 3rd child, a little girl. My second son is now 10 and he is truly a blessing.

Do you believe in miracles? I do!

The article makes no statement about "all" US females. It says the half of the women who have abortion have had previous abortions.

It tells me that some women are addicted killing their offspring.

Right, as the title states, half of the women who are having abortions in the US have had previous abortions.

"What is with the criticism of Planned Parenthood? At least they provide sexual cousneling and explain birth control and offer birth control services to low income women."

They also fail to report the rape and physical abuse of young children.

"Other than hooping and hollering about "safer "sex education and birth control education in the high schools and junior highs...and insisting on 'abstinance only " programs, the Republicans are not helping this situation very much."

Don't know about the Republicans but I prefer not to help someone murder their child.

"Using abortion as "birth control" is terrible, but we sure are not dealing with getting info and help to women who do not want abortions."

Yeah heaven forbid all that sex education should have some benefits. Planned parenthood pushes promiscuity and then makes money off the expected results.

What is with the criticism of Planned Parenthood?

How much do you know about the nation's largest abortion provider? The foundress of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, was a eugenicist, and hung around with Nazi's before it was unfashionble. The slogan of her publication was "More from the fit, fewer from the unfit." She proposed requiring $500 licenses for having children, with undesireables screened out.

It wasn't many years ago that International Planned Parenthood Federation gave an award to the Communist thugs in Red China for their mandatory 1 child per family program (so much for "pro-choice").

I could go on and on, as whole, well-documented books cover this. Of course, her own books "Pivot of Civilization" especially demonstrate this quite well. There's a reason why Planned Parenthood doesn't keep THOSE books in print, as well as her pal Lothrop Stoddard's "The Rising Tide of Colour" (The title explains it all).

I assume your question was asked in good faith. Do a little research, you might be surprised.

You have not responded with one thing that the conservatives do that is positively helping people with birth control and educating people about sexual practices.

"I prefer not to help someone murder their child."....wow, that is really a postive step in AVOIDING abortion to begin with. Abstinance only education does not work and Planned parenthood does not PUSH promiscuity. Try to prove THAT one with facts or logic.

Instead of wasting their time attacking Planned Parenthood, why don't republicans develope good sex education programs and services that really work?

They do not fail to report rape and physical abuse of children, Again you have your facts wrong! all health care providers are mandated by law to report these incidents.

Me too, after having liver problems and taking interferon I wanted my tubes tied. I already had 3 of my own children and 2 boys I raised. The drs wouldn't didn't want to tie my tubes as I don't heal well. So they put me thru all kinds of tests and decided I was sterile. Much to my surprise at 41 I had a beautiful healthy daughter. Theres 20 yrs between my 2 oldest and Lela. She is the sunshine of all our lives and a true Blessing from God.

I don't want my federal, state, or local tax dollars going to Planned Parenthood, but they deserve to exist.

I once read in a Wall Street Journal article that the ratio is 2:1. The Dumo's have twice as many abortions as the republicans.

Abortion as a method of birth control.
I believe in Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, the religion of Peace, and that Planned Parenthood is a good thing.

Until the conservatives offer an alternative to Planned parenthood to offer safer sex counseling and birth control and exams.......they really don't need to waste their time yapping about Planned Parenthood.

I just don't like hypocrites and whiners. If you don't care for Planned Parenthood, then offer an equally economic and helpful alternative ( and not one that does not allow condoms or any birth control at all) for those that can't afford a private physician.

And where are the Republicans lining up to adopt unwanted babies or better yet, unwanted children with problems and older ones? Our foster care system is overloaded with children needing parents. If this were available, maybe the women thinking about abortion would not go ahead with it.

Abortion is not the answer for birth control....but there are way too many people demonstrating about it and not enough really doing actions that would make abortions less common.
