I think Ramadan fasting is only between sunrise and sunset or something like that, so you can only eat during the short period in between. Maybe, and I'm just speculating here, the fasting period was going to begin again soon and he wanted to get something to eat during the "grace period" but couldn't make it the store or whatever. Are their 24 hour grocery stores in Britain. That's just my hypothesis. Anyway, what better way to arrest someone with a 7th century mentality than with a 12th century law?

Muslims fast for a month from sun up to sun down taking no food or water throughout the day. During this time they traditionally have a meal just before sunrise and just after sunset.
