So how long does the Military take to execute someone? Does he now get to follow the usual 20 year path of endless appeals the Civilians use?

It won't take nearly as long as it would in the civilian system. There are several automatic appeals that must be satisfied (The Court of Military Review, Court of Military Appeals, etc.) and possibly even the Supreme Court, but I would be surprised if it stretched out more than a couple of years. I would also be surprised if it isn't commuted to life in prison. This guy will be really popular with the other prisoners.

The last US military execution was in 1961. If there is such a thing as a fast track, may Mr. Akbar be on it.

No, the appeal of a death penalty is automatic. Blame the common lawyers who have complicated the original UCMJ. The result is not more justice, but more delay.
