Old age does not confer innocence. Young, wicked, malevolent people sometimes become very old, wicked, malevolent people.
Ma Barker died with a gun in her hand, and she was no sweet little old lady. Albert Fish, the monstrous child killer at the turn of the 20th century, looked like a sweet, kindly grandfatherly figure--which is how he snared his victims.
Without knowing more about the Atlanta case, I'd say the cops did what was necessary and right, given the circumstances.

Another victim of the War on Drugs. Have we won yet? Please allow me to be the first to give the usual answer when someone objects to an innocent person being gunned down in a WOD raid:
"You sound like a drug-addicted libertaaarian. We have to accept collateral damage to create a drug-free utopia. The government knows best, and it should know everything about its subjects -- especialy about you, you drug-addicted libertaaarian. The police can search my home any time without a search warrant and I wouldn't mind, because I'm not a drug-addicted libertaaarian. If she had nothing to hide, she should have left her doors unlocked."
So there. We are winning the war on drugs. We have the body count to prove it.

It is pretty hard to shoot someone before they break in the door, unless you open the door first.
A high velocity rifle is best for firing against persons who wear body armor.

Truer words were never said. What a country.

They were shot when they approached the house, not when they entered the house. The police wouldn't have been there AT her house without the INSANE war on drugs.
The war on drugs is a colossal failure and a bad joke and great waste of money!

Weren't they undercover,as in not-wearing-uniforms? So when anyone or a group of men breaks in our doors we should assume they're the good guys?
I say again that the most warants should be served in a profesional, polite maner by uniformed officers. All warants should be served by persons easily identified as officials.Breaking the door down first rightfully invites lethal response. If there was such a small quantity of drugs that a moment is time enough to get rid of them ,then it wasn't enough to be a problem.
Too bad she wasn't a better shot.
