Where does it say they lied? It says Church members "feel like it was a scam".
If they did lie the Church members have some of the responsibility. They should have verified before spending that much of the congregation's money. But either way, my point is that this was a selfless act. And in that I am sure God is pleased.

Where does it say they lied? Property transfer records for the resale list her as unmarried; the papers from the original sale list her as married.

You've made more points than that. (a) I haven't proved they lied and (b) the Church bears more responsibility than the couple.
