Office of the Governor ^ | Nov. 21, 2006

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today canvassed the results of the election for Congressional District 23 and set the special runoff election date for Tuesday, Dec. 12. Early voting will begin Dec. 4.

The Texas Election Code requires that a special election be called because no candidate received a majority of the votes cast in the Nov. 7 general election. The special election will be between U.S. Rep. Henry Bonilla, who received 48.6 percent of the votes, and Ciro D. Rodriguez, who received 19.87 percent of the votes cast.

Dec. 12 is the earliest the special election can be called under Texas law.

Someone got 48.6% and someone got 19.87%. That leaves 31.53%. Who got that, none of the above?

I see that there was a Republican and about six democrats and an independent on the ballot. No dem primary? And this district went to the Supreme Court? I only have seen three House districts on the tube to be settled. I don't think Texas 23 was mentioned.

Could be an interesting race. The Republican is 1.4% from where he needs to be. Shouldn't be too hard, but then again most of the other candidates were Dems.

This is where Nancy Pelosi's early mishaps could matter, especially if she picks Hastings for the intelligence chairmanship.

"The Republican is 1.4% from where he needs to be."

I think, perhaps, dems will not have much of an incentive to return to the polls.

Dist 23 needs to make sure Republican get out the vote.

Having 6 Democrats in the general election means it is likely that there was at least one Conservative Democrat in the race who would take votes from Bonilla. Now that it is just the Super-Liberal Ciro Rodriquez vs. Bonilla, its likely that those Conservative Democrats and Independents will return to Bonilla. Id say Bonilla wins 55%-45%.

Oh my, the Texas DemocRAT party ran out of dead, 'Stuck on Stupid' DemocRATS and failed to turn out enough illegal Mexican votes to elect their favorite conservative democRAT

The RATS forced a redrawing of the district boundary's after the primary. The district still goes from El Paso to San Antonio to Laredo, but the surrounding four districts gained or lost area in the deal.

Henry carried Kinney county with 61%.
