HONOLULU -- The acting director of the White House Travel Office was robbed and beaten in Waikiki early on Tuesday morning outside a nightclub, according to Honolulu police.
Three men mugged Greg Pitts at about 2 a.m. while he was walking through the International Marketplace near Bobby G's Dance Club, police said.
Pitts accompanied President George W. Bush on a brief visit to Hawaii. The stop came after an eight-day trip to Asia.

Why did Hillary want him out of the way? Wasn't Billy Dale enough?
Good question. Was he her b*tch?
When accosted by the strangers, Greg said they demanded to know the frequency....
What was the mugger's DU screen name?
Let's see, they had an accident on the road into Hickum and now this....they better just declare Hawaii a quagmire and leave.
I coulda warned him. Same thing happened to me on a Waikiki beach access walkway around 11 pm. I woke up in the hospital not knowing how I got there. He needs to check with the Hawaii tourist bureau about crime compensation. He might be able to come out a couple dollars ahead, like me...
Just there this summer just not not at 2 am.
Lots of crime there, lots of corruption as well. I know a guy who opened a bar there years ago, and he had to buy his way into business through bribes to local officials. I would never walk on the street at 2 am by myself, especially being a caucasian.
Cripes.
Call me naive - but I generally doesn't make an association with the words "Waikiki Beach" and "crime".
Has Honolulu gotten that bad?
I didn't either. Paradise is not perfect. Sometimes it's just a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
How may one submit a list of eligibles for an ass kicking, and is it restricted to only staffers or can a Rep get booted too? Must they be in Hawaii or can a franchise be set up in the D.C.Metro area?
The guy was cruising for something...girls, guys, drugs...
Waikiki has, we went 2 times (got a free plane ride the 2nd time - note, free rides can be expensive) and the locals do not care much for the tourist, they are rather nasty and the cops do not care.
Hawaii seems to have become a bastion of racism and liberalism. Is this just the product of that combination?
Was that way in the 70's.....can't imagine it's changed much.
In 2005 Hawai'i ranked 43rd in violent crimes per 100,000 population. Therefore, 42 states have more violent crime. Now when it comes to crimes against property, Hawai'i ranks right up there in the top 10, but that's more a function of tons of vacation homes sitting around empty for 10 months out of the year. Only 24 murders while New York had 874. Granted, NY is larger by 15 times (1.2M compared to 18M), but if you do the math NY still has a 250% higher rate per person. |
It's that not bad. Even at 2 am, the area he was in is mainly tourists. A block or two over is a 'prowl zone' for street walkers...
