Few things in Berkeley are as sacred as a coast live oak.
The gnarled Berkeley natives are protected by city law, supported by a council resolution and are a favorite of environmentalists.
But that might not be enough to save 38 coast live oaks from UC's plan to clear part of a grove next to Memorial Stadium to make way for an athletic training center promised to football coach Jeff Tedford.
"Those trees are far more valuable than this passing fancy for a high-priced football coach who may be gone in a season or two," said Joanna Dwyer, who lives across the street from the stadium and belongs to a citizens' group called Save the Oaks at the Stadium. "A lot of people are going to be pissed if those trees go."
. . . But the trees won't go down without a fight from the Berkeley City Council, local activists, the Sierra Club, California Native Plant Society and such luminaries as Wavy Gravy, Country Joe McDonald and Julia Butterfly Hill.

Doug doesn't seem to understand that City law doesn't apply on University property
There are approximately 3.7 trillion coast live oaks in the Bay Area - they aren't exactly an endangered species. The world won't end if UC chops down a few. ;)
firewood ?
You had my hopes up that Mumia needed a memorial site.
Fry Mumia!
You betcha!
I hate tree huggers and love football. Cal football especially. One of my favotite walking trips is from the Shattuck Avenue BART station up through those oaks to Memorial Stadium. I hope they can find another spot for the training center.
Kind of scrawny looking live oaks, going by the photos.
But a little greenery is always welcome.
This is a pretty stand of trees. It will be a shame to see them go. UC built a huge Althletic Palace a few years back. There really is no need for this new one.
I used to live in the I-House, which is right next to these trees. There is not much greenery left in that part of town.
Wow, another loss to The Trojans and the Commies are taking an ax to themselves!

What a snotty smug look. Someone should take his stuffed toy and shove it into his mouth.
Hmmmm... tears, perhaps.
1) It's a little hard to play football in a basketball arena. Do you watch many sports?
2) The main reason to rebuild the stadium is for earthquake safety. How many people should we be willing to sacrifice to save 30 trees?
3) Check out the master plan for the area. The entire landscape will be redone and it will be better suited for pedestrians. It's going to be beautiful.

4) The stadium sits on the edge of Strawberry Canyon, which has hundreds of thousands of trees.
UC-Berkeley has an athletic dept.? Ewwww!
It'll look terrible and grossly artificial.
Fear, not. Jocks, hasbeens and wannabes will get their stadium. This "hot" coach will fade or bail. Students will scream about high fees (most will go to insurance for the teams), standards will continue to drop, people in favor of the trees will be slandered as commie, homosexual, anti-sports, anti-competition, etc.
I like the trees. How about a little ACADEMIC pursuit for a change?
If young adults want to play semi-pro sports, get the pro leagues to create farm clubs. I'm fully in favor of a clear separation of sports-and-schools at both the high school and college levels.
LOL
