A WORLD AT WAR Of Gridlock, Conscription And Politics
San Antonio Lightning ^ | 11-20-2006 | Major Jim Miles (Ret.)

Posted on 11/20/2006 4:34:35 PM PST by SwinneySwitch

President Bush is going to be a "crippled duck" with the Democrats running the farm in congress. Gridlock, talk of Conscription and partisan politics will rule the day.

Some, including myself, believe gridlock isn't such a bad thing in government. There will be so much backbiting, in-fighting and endless hearings going on that wasteful, worthless and costly (to our wallets) legislation will never make it out of congress.

The big concern is what impact the election will have on the war effort, especially the war in Iraq. Will there be a draft? Will we retreat? What is the future of our military.

What happens in Iraq will have far reaching effects on the war on terror and America's role as a world power.

And the world is watching.

The terrorists and the rest of our enemies must have been encouraged by the Democrats return to power in Congress.

The big win by Democrats has sent a message to al Qaida that they are winning in Iraq. If the terrorists keep up the violence America will "cut and run." They may be proven right.

There is little doubt that the war in Iraq was the defining issue in mid-term elections. The war has clearly divided the nation.

Americans are in for a rude shock if they believe Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, John Murtha, Dick Durbin and the rest of their cohorts are the answer to solving the serious problems confronting the nation.

I haven't heard anything about "winning" the war coming from Pelosi or Reid.

If the Democrats pursue the same failed policies that led to our defeats in Korea, Vietnam and the debacles in Somalia and Bosnia the terrorist will win in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Murtha's plan to redeploy our troops to places like Okinawa is a prescription for disaster. Besides the Japanese would oppose such a move as they are already concerned over the number of US troops already stationed there.

Everything we have gained so far in Iraq would be wasted in a troop pull out. We would only have to fight our way back in again.

Gen. John Abizaid, the top US Commander in the Middle East, bluntly warned Congress Wednesday Nov. 15, that he was against setting a timetable for a pullout of troops from Iraq.

Abizaid went on to say that if Congress legislated a phased withdrawal starting in four to six months "sectarian violence would increase."

You can bet the "cut and run crowd" were upset over Abiziad's testimony.

In an effort to appease the Pelosi/Reid crowd President Bush has already thrown Defense Secretary Rumsfeld to the sharks.

UN Ambassador John Bolton will probably be thrown overboard, too.

There may also be a shake up of the top military brass given Gen.Abizaid's opposition to a pullout.

Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader "Dingy" Harry Reid have proclaimed that the "people" have spoken for a change of direction for the country.

Actually, only a small number had anything to say other than to whine and complain over mundane issues.

When it comes to voting less than a third of eligible voters even bothered to vote.

It's a sad state of affairs when over two-thirds of the nation's voters stayed home.

Radio and TV talk show host Sean Hannity routinely sends out a reporter to conduct "on the street" interviews. Many of those interviewed are college students.

Most had never heard of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Dennis Hastert, or Donald Rumsfeld. They didn't know how many justices there were on the US Supreme Court or any of their names. Couldn't name the three branches of government. Some had never heard of Dick Cheney or Condoleezza Rice.

However, they had no problems naming all the popular movie and TV stars and comic book heroes.

This is a good example of just how far the "dumbing down" of America has gone.

The following are examples of how traditional American values and customs have been eroded:

- God, the Bible and prayer have been removed from our public schools and replaced by drugs, booze, sex and guns.

- There's a move to have "under God" removed from the pledge of allegiance. Some public school districts are trying to have the entire pledge removed.

- The American Flag can be burned, trampled and torn as a form of "free speech."

- English as America's official language is being threatened by those trying to force Spanish on the country.

- Traditional marriage between a man and a woman is being attacked by homosexuals who want same sex marriage the law of the land.

Adding to the problems facing the country is the fact that the country is awash in illegal drugs. Illegal drugs are in our schools, colleges and universities, communities large and small, all levels of government, hospitals, jails and prisons, the military, law enforcement and just about every facet of American lives. Kids as young as six are on hooked on drugs.

Illegal aliens continue to pour across our open borders overwhelming our hospitals, schools, prisons and social services and the government seems powerless to stop it. Estimates of illegal aliens already here run as high as 20 million. Unfortunately, the government really has no idea of how many are here, their names or where they are.

You can bet the terrorists have taken full advantage of our open borders. So have the drug cartels and human smugglers.

Despite all the problems the countries economy is booming, unemployment is at it's lowest in decades and the stock market has reached record highs.

Our volunteer military is taking the fight to the enemy in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their efforts have made it more difficult for the enemy to attack us here at home, although the Bush administration has admitted that another terrorist attack or attacks on US soil is "inevitable."

Another major problem facing our nation is the fact that many Americans have become too fat, dumb and lazy and enjoying the good life to give a damn about their country.

The 911 attack that killed 3,000 Americans was a wakeup call for the nation. Even the fiercely divided Congress, Republicans, Democrats, Independents all joined arms on the Capitol steps and sang "God Bless America" in a sign of unity.

The unity didn't last long. It was soon back to business as usual. Name calling, back stabbing, finger pointing and power grabs.

Most Americans soon put the attack out of their minds and got on with their lives more concerned about gas prices and Hollywood gossip columns. The "War on Terror" took a back burner except for the families of loved ones who were in the military and in harms way.

In Jan. 1941, as WWII loomed on the horizon, President Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke to the nation. "The Nation's hands must not be tied when the nation's life is in danger. We will not be intimidated by the threats of dictators. We must all prepare to make the sacrifices that the emergency demands. A free nation has the right to expect full cooperation from all groups. The best way of dealing with the few slackers or trouble makers in our midst is, first shame them by patriotic example, and if that fails to use the sovereignty of government to save government. When dictators are ready to make war upon us, they will not wait for an act of war on our part."

On Dec. 7, 1941, twelve months after Roosevelt's speech the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

Roosevelt's warning in Jan. 1941 is relevant today.

Wake up America. We are at war.

Conscription has already been swept under the carpet.

I would love to find some demographics of our military. I'm sick of these idiots repeating the fantasy that poor minorities make up the bulk of our military.

Just google "military demographics". I would point you to an article, but google will give you demographics in many categories - for example, just the army, or just the casualties. They're all interesting, and nothing like Cary or Rangel would have you believe.

"President Bush is going to be a 'crippled duck' with the Democrats running the farm in congress."

It's his own damn fault.
