I've never quite understood why the word became such a taboo. It's simply a corruption of the Spanish word for black. The irony is that about the time "nigger" and "Negro" became taboo, African Americans insisted on being called "blacks".

What it means is that white people should not say 'nigger' because it hurts black people's feelings.

Blacks assign more power to the opinions and words of whites than they do to their own people's opinions and words.

We should not abuse that power.
