Funny how the Dems did not mention during the campaign that reinstating the draft would be a number one priority.
"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way..."
And so what is the point here? I bet they would not have voted for WWII if women could have been drafted. So what?

Good I hope the Dems run on that. It should assure an election loss in 2008.

I think the Muslim world looks at us as paper tigers who will run at the first hint of resistance. I think that the reinstatement of the draft says that we're in it for the long haul and will pay the price to win. We need a bigger footprint in the region. Dismantel the boutique brigades and raise an Army Strong not an Army of one.

First the discussion has to be aimed at a more general level - how much of the federal budget should be dedicated to the military. I read somewhere in a thread earlier today that that currently is just under 5%. I can't verify that or quote a source, but until somebody finds a better number, I'm going to use it.
Given that a common defense is one the few things the Constitution specifically authorizes the federal government to do, is 5% enough?
The only reason this is important is that, in order to actually start the draft again, and go back to a 2-year cycle-in, cycle-out routine, the number of training facilities would have to be expanded dramatically, along with all the other overhead that would come from a larger force of people who most likely do not consider this to be a career opportunity.
After all that, then you can have the discussion about how to fairly administer draft obligations, and that would be a long, interesting debate. I still have my field jacket, with no insignia. I've told my children that it was my door prize from Mr. Nixon's lottery, and then I found out how much American history they learned in school.

It's always a good time to quote Milton Friedman:General William Westmoreland, testifying before President Nixon's Commission on an All-Volunteer [Military] Force, denounced the idea, saying that he did not want to command an army of mercenaries.
Milton Friedman interrupted him: "General, would you rather command an army of slaves?"

The Dems must be very desperate for a new class of victims, but how are they planning to blame someone else for this one?
He might want to consider that if his insinuations that the draft was just a way to kill young black and brown people he would be killing his voting base.
By the way, I think a years stint for all young in some form of service to the nation would help to remind them that freedom is not free.

Has anyone mentioned the fact that Rangel introduced a draft bill last year and HE voted against it? I don't think the bill got even got one vote. Why isn't this mentioned in any of the articles?

Someone should call this LIAR on this.
Those that volunteer today are mostly Republicans, not RATS. The rats that do join only do so in hopes of getting a free education. The moment they are called to duty they run for Canada and call themselves conscientious objectors.
That God Canada's new conservative government has closed that door, and kicked those cowards out, calling them the deserters that they are.
It should be rightfully spun back at the DEM's that they want the draft because nobody will volunteer to serve while Democrats hold any power.
To: Brilliant
Isn't this what the Dims have always accused the Republicans of trying to do, in the most heinous of terms?
Chuck, you are F'ed up. Every crappy thing you ever said about Republicans applies to YOU, not us. Your projectionist crap has come home to roost.
