The correct term is conscript. And Roosevelt didn't think so highly of that generation that he though they would voluntarily do their great work.

Your posts on this thread have been right on.

So if we have a draft, does that mean that illegals will take the jobs Americans won't be able to do?

Thank you for telling people how to live their lives
To: Jim Noble
Yup! Something will have to happen to wake the sleeping giant before the country agrees to a draft.
To: Jim Noble
Why not? Were our fathers too stupid to see the threat? To lazy and corrupt to take on the task without a gun to their heads?
Do you think we could have conquered Germany and Japan with volunteers?

"What a novel way to sidestep the real issue: is freedom "free"?"
Which branch did you serve in?

"What was it like when you served with men who were drafted? Were there many problems?"
They were guys like Elvis. They came, did their job for two years and moved on. Many stayed. Sure it got crazy during Vietnam but the draft dodgers and deserters hogged the news. Again, most did their job.

But further, if you read on you'll realize that reading is what one needs to be doing in their spare time. He, in fact, "reads 20 books a year"

I agree, but in the earlier wars people felt a sense of duty to serve and that is something that is lacking today. Although, many signed up after 9/11 it seems the sense of duty is lost once again. Honestly, I think the generation of today could use a few years in the service.

The army isn't a social program to mold young men and women into your ideal. Don't get sucked into this. What we'll end up with is a social program to mold young men and women into Charley Rangle's ideal.

>> I agree with him too. Having a draft would expose more young people to the military
Are the recruitment levels problematic such that a draft is required?
Would our Country and youth be better served by supplanting the illegal immigrant workforce with your draft candidates?
To: leadpenny
Good to hear, and of course the media didn't focus on the ones who did their job just the ones who went to Canada.

The United States military wouldn't be having a problem with troop shortages, if they the DEMS/LIBERALS didn't slash the military during the Clinton regime. The whole time Clintoon was in, the dems were reducing the numbers of forces and equipment. While the current war has going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Bush administration has had to try to build back up the military while fighting with the libs who refuse to spend more money on everything needed to support the troops.
This IS NOT something you will hear about from the MSM.

Note to all: If you'veserved in the military, you've earned your right to an opinion on this issue. Knock yourself out.
If not, you have zero right to tell others they should be forced to serve. Join the military yourselves or shut up.
