Webb won because of a number of factors here in VA. First, the state is starting to trend Dem. Northern VA is becoming a Dem stronghold, which impacts the entire state because of demographics. The election of Kaine as governor following Warner was an indicator of this continuing trend, which became evident in 2004, when Fairfax County went for Kerry, the first time a Dem presidential candidate did that in 40 years.

Second, Webb was an inspired choice for the Dems. He is a USNA grad, former NavSec under Reagan, a legitimate war hero as a winner of a Navy Cross, and has a son in the Marines in Iraq. He also has deep family roots in Va. As a result, Webb did very well in the heavily Navy areas of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, normally Rep strongholds that counterbalance Northern VA.

Finally, Allen made a couple of missteps that were pounced on relentlessly by the WP, which attacked Allen for months leading up to election day. I have never witnessed such a concerted attack by a supposedly objective and national newspaper like the WP. Allen was savaged and nothing negative appeared about Webb.

As a sidebar, I found it interesting that the WP endorsed Harrison Miller, Webb's opponent in the Dem primary. I recognized Webb's threat to Allen and voted for Miller in the open primary, but Webb won and the rest is history.

Question .. has new housing developments been going up in those areas??

The reason I ask is because the county I live in use to be very heavily republican territory

But years back the zoning laws were changed, properties were reassessed which caused taxes on farm lands to go up and ended with them selling land for new development homes

Which brought many of the libs from the Philly area

I believe the single most important point you made was how the DBM and particularly the Washington Post had trashed George Allen way before the Macacca nonsense. The DBM played a huge role in this election as most of us knew they would when the ridiculous CFR bill was passed. We as Republicans were hamstrung, and the DBM got to lie, accuse, omit facts, retell stories with misinformation, and behave more like Pravda than a decent legitimate News Source for Weeks on end. They knew that they would look bad after the fact, and they figured just one more election cycle in the tank for the Rats and then they would have the Rats in Power to take the Presidency back and keep control of Congress in Rat hands. They are figuring on the Conservatives coming back to them since they have this umbilical cord attachment to their morning Newspapers, and in some cases they are right. We have to drive them down to the gutter where they belong, but without the Conservatives/Republicans canceling their Papers, and not watching their News Programs they will not be punished. They are counting on the Republicans/Conservatives inability/no desire to seek news elsewhere. It is going to be hard work and will take sacrifice, but it must be done, and sooner not later. They are laughing at Conservatives for their short sightedness as we speak. We can do this, we just have to recognize the battle and plot the strategy to win.

The same demographics have made Maryland unwinnable for a statewide Republican candidate. The money associated with working in the DC area is huge and will only continue to grow to be an ever larger influence. Charles and Howard county in MD went Dem for the first time. I attribute that to well-paid Federal employee commuters, who are living farther and farther from the Beltway, and have a vested interest in big government.

It is either succumb to despar or switch to the Food Channel for my TV viewing from now on!
