A Tough Road Ahead for Rove

By JIM RUTENBERG and ADAM NAGOURNEY

Published: November 19, 2006

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 — Karl Rove, the top White House political strategist, is coming off the worst election defeat of his career to face a daunting task: saving the president’s agenda with a Congress not only controlled by Democrats, but also filled with Republican members resentful of the way he and the White House conducted the losing campaign.

Things have not gotten off to a great start since the election. Democrats are taking Mr. Rove’s continued influence at the White House — as well as some of its recent moves, like nominating conservative judges for the federal bench — as a sign that Mr. Bush’s conciliatory pledges of bipartisanship will prove to be fleeting.

“Karl’s role has not been to serve as a bridge over troubled waters; he has tried to stir the waters as often as possible,” said Senator Richard J. Durbin, the Illinois Democrat who will be the second-most powerful person in the Senate next year. “Maybe he got religion on Nov. 7, but we’ll see.”

This coming from a "man" (Senator Turban) who compared our armed forces to the Nazis. Who gives a shiite what Dick Durbin thinks about anything?

They still don't get it. They have no idea what's going on outside the beltway.

Speaking of religion, pro-baort Dickhead Durbin always sits in the front row at Holy Name Cathedral and is first in line for commmunion.

The president's agenda includes allowing 12 million illegal Mexicans to become citizens. Count me out as a supporter, thanks.

I have it on very good information that Mr. Rove is a very devout man.

Yeah considering your personal political Idol is Bill Clinton, a man who failed at everything he touched, I would not be so quick to crow Senator Treason.

Check your spelling. It is "turdban".

“Maybe he got religion on Nov. 7, but we’ll see.”

On the contrary. The democrats got religion. They went conservative, wore crosses around their necks, showed up in churches, and even hauled around little black bibles under their arms.

The left just doesn't get it. Their candidates were even farther right than ours were. That's why we lost.

I think the voters will be more than ready to kick the democrats out in 2008 if they turn back to their sinful, liberal ways. LOL.

Senator Turban sure is cocky, considering his party only has a 50-49 majority, with Lieberman hinting he might jump if he doesn't like the way things are going.

Yes: They still blame the President for their failure.

Not to say that the president hasnt had his own share of failures and mistakes, but republican majority with courage could have made an indelible mark on the world instead of a skidmark in America's shorts.

I remember the first time I saw Durbin on tv, during the Senate hearings on the Clinton fundraising scandals. I just about lost my lunch. What a slimy, mealy-mouthed creep!

Sheesh. I mean over all. The democrats couldn't have won had they not gone farther to the right than our guys. Webb ran as a pro-life, pro-gun, anti-big government and anti-spending blue blood democrat. He ran to the right of McCain - who wants to be the next leader of our party!

Why doesn't the NYT just get religion and add DNC to their name. It's an accomplished fact so why not be open about it.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I can easily see the dem leadership misinterpreting the importance of the results of this 6th year off year election and badly overreaching, doing everything they can to insure that they really get it handed to them in the ugliest way in 2008 by a re-invigorated Republican party...
