LOS ANGELES -- One balmy summer night, Larna Hartnack awoke to the cries of her dog Charlie and, to her horror, found the Dalmatian in a battle for her life -- pinned by a gang of raccoons that tore into her flesh and nearly gnawed off her tail.
Charlie survived. But recurring raccoon attacks on dogs and other creatures have unnerved people along the Venice Canals, a funky, well-to-do beach neighborhood packed with ardent dog lovers, many of whom are now afraid to walk their pets at night or leave them alone in the back yard.
Communities around the country are plagued by destructive or aggressive raccoons, and many of them routinely trap, remove and even kill the animals. But this being California, the city's animal-control agency is instead urging people to try to get along with the raccoons -- a notion that strikes some as political correctness gone wild.
"What we're trying to inculcate in the L.A. community is a reverence for life. If we have more reverence for life, it translates into all our programs -- for women and infants, the elderly and everybody in our community," said Ed Boks, the head of Los Angeles Animal Services.
"As we develop these programs that demonstrate our compassion for creatures completely at our mercy, it makes for a more compassionate society all the way around."
Wildlife experts are commending the city for resisting demands to remove the raccoons. No-kill policies are rare among animal-control agencies in the U.S., and most apply only to dogs and cats. In Los Angeles, rabies in raccoons is not as big a threat as it is in other parts of the country, and there may be more sympathy for wildlife.

1 Raccoon, cleaned
4 Carrots, chopped
3 Potatoes, chopped
2 Stalks of celery, chopped
1 Bag of frozen mixed vegetables
1 16 oz. can stewed tomatoes
Your favorite stew seasonings
Directions:
Remove glands and as much fat as you can from raccoon. Parboil until done, skimming fat off water as it rises to the top. Remove raccoon and let cool. De-bone meat and hold aside.
Add carrots, potatoes, celery, mixed vegetables and canned tomatoes to the pot. Add meat to pot. Add seasonings. Keep at a low simmer until ready to serve. For a thicker stew, add flour mix with cold water before serving, stir until thickened.
Serves 4
We have 4 black mouth yellow curs. I don't hunt but they sure would put a hurting on any coon they tangled with. But even some hunting breeds would be hard pressed to fight off an attack of several raccoons.
A 5-million CP light gun costs about ~$20. A flash in a raccoon's eyes blinds him for a few minutes while I train a very hard jet of ice cold water on him. Top it off with a jet of straight ammonia to the eyes/nose and you've just trained him to avoid your property for at least his next 100 lifetimes.
Try shakin hands with one of these little flea bags sometime!!!
We catch 'em in the stray cat trap and throw trap and all into the trunk and then drive around lookin for folks that have offended us in the past! A humane "catch & release" program, don'tcha think???

I used to have a couple of pet raccoons...I also had a 90 pound all muscle male Black Lab. He could of broke a coons neck in a minute or two....I'd give ol Fred 15 seconds.
The picture is from Varmint Al's web page. A great site for yote hunting. I hunt yotes in the central valley foothills and my favorite rifle from the armory for this purpose is my bull barrel Remington VLS .22-250 loaded with Hornady V-max ballistic tips using Varget powder. Deadly accurate with a 32X scope and micro click adjustment out past 700 yards. Try to keep most shots within 200 yards.
Ornery bandits, they never met a trash can they didn't like.
Lot's of dog's here.....friend shoots a Ruger 220 Swift....
I shoot my deer rifle, .270 Winchester....I can reach out and touch some flesh with it, on the good days. Ha!!
Would like to own a 220, 243, 25-06, or 22-250 to shoot dogs with...but have not purchased one as of yet.
