At issue is an order issued last fall by the Federal Communications Commission that set a deadline of May 14, 2007, by which most broadband and Internet phone providers are required to reengineer their networks for easier snooping by law enforcement.

Which will mean easier snooping by everyone.

Laws written and interpreted by the technically clueless.

If I don't want you monitoring my communications... trust me, neither FBI nor the NSA would be able to do so unless they bugged either me or the person I was talking to. Trying to use the carrier to bug the communication is next to worthless against someone who is even half way trying to not get intercepted.
