Speaker Pelosi Tempts Disaster
New York Times ^ | November 17, 2006 | Editorial Board

Posted on 11/17/2006 8:34:42 AM PST by Dane

Nancy Pelosi has managed to severely scar her leadership even before taking up the gavel as the new speaker of the House. First, she played politics with the leadership of the House Intelligence Committee to settle an old score and a new debt. And then she put herself in a lose-lose position by trying to force a badly tarnished ally, Representative John Murtha, on the incoming Democratic Congress as majority leader. The party caucus put a decisive end to that gambit yesterday, giving the No. 2 job to Steny Hoyer, a longtime Pelosi rival.

But Ms. Pelosi’s damage to herself was already done. The well-known shortcomings of Mr. Murtha were broadcast for all to see — from his quid-pro-quo addiction to moneyed lobbyists to the grainy government tape of his involvement in the Abscam scandal a generation ago. The resurrected tape — feasted upon by Pelosi enemies — shows how Mr. Murtha narrowly survived as an unindicted co-conspirator, admittedly tempted but finally rebuffing a bribe offer: “I’m not interested — at this point.”

Mr. Murtha would have been a farcical presence in a leadership promising the cleanest Congress in history. Ms. Pelosi should have been first to realize this, having made such a fiery campaign sword of her vows to end Capitol corruption. Instead, she acted like some old-time precinct boss and lost the first test before her peers.

As incoming speaker, Ms. Pelosi will be dogged by skepticism — from within the party and without — about her political smarts and her ability to deliver a galvanized agenda.

The Demoncrats are fundamentally incapable of producing ... a galvanized agenda". That is a fact irrespective of "her ability to deliver a galvanized agenda"

By repeatedly declaring "we are unified" we know the opposite is true, and they are just trying to quiet dissent and analysis.

I think I'll refer to her as Speaker Pelousy.

"The resurrected tape — feasted upon by Pelosi enemies..."

That's a laugh. For two weeks the MSM kept Foley on the front page for sending emails and IMs to a page. While the Foley thing was depicable, Murtha's considering bribes seems a matter of greater concern. IMO

#20...

More convinced than ever that there will be some party switches unless the newbies want to be one term wonders. Probably not enough to give House control back to the Republicans.

Excellent observation. Then again, democrats think differently from the way Republicans do.

"The well-known shortcomings of Mr. Murtha were broadcast for all to see" I don't remember seeing this in the MSM before the elections.

Too true. It's like clockwork. Democrats have total memory loss of all the historical scandals they routinely use against each other, and then feign like they just remembered all this stuff right after their hit job on the GOP. Not just the press, but your average 'Rat debater is a complete liar when it comes to honest debate, with no fidelity to truth whatsoever.

They seem to think that if a tree falls in the woods, and it is not blared out on the front pages as every slight GOP failing is, then....it just didn't happen. "I've never heard of that", they might say - knowing full well they're lying through their teeth, or they might say "Yeah, but that was no big deal", as if the wilfull disregard of jaw-dropping scandal by 'Rat politicos comes from a completely objective judgement on newsworthiness by a non-partisan and unbiased press.

These people do not fight fair, they never have, and we will continue to lose if we don't either squelch their guerilla tactics with political MOABS from on high, or get down in their mud-filled polemic trenches with fixed bayonets.

Actually, I think it's been the MSM who has gone after Murtha. They're the ones who didn't want him to show Americans what real Dems are like. Might hurt their 2008 chances.

I'm amazed they keep voting for this guy. Sort of like they do for Kennedy. My good friend's mother-in-law doesn't agree with any of the Dem's socialist agenda, but keeps voting for them anyway (always have voted Dem, why change?). How dumb is that?

(Nice car, by the way. I have a SPF/Roush - insane ride! Guess I need to change my screen name - no more ducs.)

"Speaker Pelousy"

Well, that's perfect ! If you just came up with that, I hope you get credit when everyone starts to use it.

This nitwit doesn't have a clue. Imagine her as President? This bag has to be run out of Congress. She is as corrupt as any politician could be.
